The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 231

He always thought things through before making a move, never one to act on impulse.

Freddy nodded lightly at Nathalie, then stood and left without another word.

Damaris didn’t move from her seat. She was caught in the middle, not wanting to go but too scared of Lance to stay comfortably.

Nathalie slowly breathed out, trying to ease the tension. “Damaris, you should head home for now,” she told her gently.

“But…” Damaris looked at Lance, her eyes wide and anxious.

Nathalie gave her a small, reassuring smile. “Really, it’s fine. It’s not like he’s going to kill me.”

Lance’s expression turned still and cold. He glanced at Nathalie, his eyes dark and unreadable.

Damaris chewed her lip, wanting so much to say she’d stay.

But Nathalie had already grabbed her hand and led her to the door. “Go home, get some rest, and don’t worry. I’ll be okay.”

Even as Damaris was gently ushered out, lines of worry stayed etched on her face.

To Damaris, Lance was terrifying. No, he was even worse than that. His mood could flip in an instant. She’d gotten in his way a few times now and even moved here without telling him. No doubt he was furious. What if he… hurt Nathalie?

She hovered by the doorway for ages, unwilling to truly leave. She strained her ears for any sounds from inside, ready to call the police at the first sign of trouble.

Inside, the tension lingered in the air.

Nathalie turned to Lance, her voice cold and sharp. “Well? Are you happy now?”

“Why did you move?” Lance asked, still sitting at the table. He didn’t even look up as he picked up her chopsticks and started dipping meat in the hotpot, talking like this was just a normal conversation.

He walked over to the sofa, sitting down with the quiet dignity that always made her uneasy. “You invite me over and don’t even offer me a glass of water?”

He glanced at the coffee table where a glass of water sat—the one she’d poured for Freddy. She always treated her guests with kindness, but when it came to him, all that warmth was gone.

It wasn’t fair. He was her husband. They’d been in love for years. How could she turn so cold to him?

That ache of unfairness roiled inside him.

Nathalie didn’t budge. Her eyes were cool as she replied, “If you like it here so much, stay. I’m tired. I’m going to bed.”

“Unblock me,” Lance said quietly, his voice dropping low.

When he first tried to visit, the guard had stopped him. That’s when he realized—he was on Nathalie’s block list.
