The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 241

Nathalie took a slow breath and said, “I really wasn’t feeling well last night.”

“It wasn’t just because you didn’t want to see me?”

Lance’s dark eyes locked onto her, calm but intense.

Of course he knew the answer. Why even ask? Nathalie rolled her eyes in her mind.

Fabian was so weak, any more drama would be too much for him to handle. Holding back her frustration, Nathalie asked, “Did you need something else?”

“I’m here to see him.” Lance gave a slight nod toward Fabian, who was quietly sitting behind her.

Nathalie almost laughed out loud. As if Lance would ever show up out of kindness. He probably just wanted to make sure Fabian was still alive.

Fabian had just finished a bowl of porridge and let out a soft sigh. “If you’re planning to bring that up again, just forget it. I’m not changing my mind.”

Lance’s eyes grew even colder. “You’re really not afraid to die?”

Fabian gave him a half-smile, almost mocking. “If you actually killed me, you do realize you’d never have a future with her, right?”

Who would stay married to someone caught up in a death like that? Nobody, that’s who.

Nathalie would totally snap.

And was that what Lance really wanted? No, definitely not. Deep down, he wanted things to go back to how they used to be, when they actually cared about each other. Not end up like this.

Standing between these two, Nathalie could practically feel the chill in the air. None of this was good for Fabian’s recovery.

She quickly grabbed Lance’s arm. “It’s almost time for work. Let’s go. We better head out together.”

Lance paused, glancing down at her hand. She was the one reaching for him.

Had it really been that long since she’d done something like this?

For a second, his heart thudded in his chest.

For once, he didn’t bother her after that.

Nathalie leaned into the seat and closed her eyes, but her whole body was still tense. She was only acting meek because she didn’t want to argue anymore. The only thing she really wanted was to get away from him and end this marriage for good.

The car stopped in front of The Adams Group building. Nathalie opened her eyes, got out, and didn’t give Lance so much as a glance.

Lance watched her walk away, his eyes dark and stormy, his face set in a deep frown.

At her desk, Nathalie pulled out her phone and called the DNA lab to check on the results.

The person on the other end sounded like they were clicking away on the computer. After a moment, they said, “Sorry, ma’am, there was a mistake on our end. The data was lost. We still have the original samples, though, so we’ll run the test again. Please wait another three business days.”

“What do you mean, lost? How does something like that even happen?” Nathalie’s brow furrowed. “Didn’t you back up the files?”

“No, there wasn’t a backup.”
