After she hung up, Nathalie couldn’t shake the tension from her face. She grabbed her phone and called Fabian right away.
“Hello?” Fabian sounded confused. “What’s up?”
Nathalie explained the mess with the paternity test, then asked, “Does stuff like this actually happen?”
Fabian sounded genuinely surprised. “Really? Let me check and get back to you.”
“Alright.”
Fabian was the one who’d put her in touch with the lab. He knew people there, which definitely made it easier to get answers. Nathalie tried to distract herself by looking over her script while she waited.
Half an hour later, Fabian called back.
He let out a sigh. “I talked to them. Apparently, the guy in charge of managing the data messed up and wiped everything by accident. They already fired him. It’s not just your results—they have to redo everyone’s tests.”
Nathalie nodded slowly. “Okay. I guess I’ll just wait a few more days.”
“It’s only a couple of days more. It won’t make much difference.”
Nathalie dropped her gaze and, for a moment, Lance came to mind. She hesitated, then asked, “Do you think… is it possible Lance had something to do with this?”
Fabian was caught off guard. “What? Lance? You think it was him?”
“Yeah. He knows about the test,” Nathalie said softly.
Fabian took a second to think it over. “Honestly, I don’t see why he’d do something like that. I doubt it was him.”
Nathalie rubbed her temples. “Maybe I’m just overthinking everything.”
Lance had her feeling jumpy, always on edge.
Fabian tried to reassure her, his tone gentle. “Relax, okay? Nothing else is going to go wrong.”
Lance didn’t argue. He simply stood up and walked out of the studio.
Once he was gone, Nathalie let out the breath she’d been holding, trying to calm herself before she started again. The project was almost finished—this definitely wasn’t the time for distractions. If anything else went wrong now, there’d be no way to fix it before the deadline.
When work finally wrapped up, Nathalie gathered her things to head home. On her way out, her phone rang. She looked at the screen and immediately smiled.
“Hi, Grandma.”
Adelaide’s warm voice came through, “Nathalie, where are you?”
“I just finished work, Grandma,” Nathalie replied, her tone instantly softer. “What’s up? Are you here?”
“I am,” Adelaide said with a laugh. “Lance came to pick me up. I’m at your place now. How soon can you get home?”
Nathalie’s hand tightened around her phone. Her grandma had come—and Lance, of all people, was the one who picked her up and took her to Lumina Grand. How did he even know she was coming?
