The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 244

Nathalie yanked her hand free, her eyes suddenly sharp and cold as she fixed her gaze on him. She kept her voice low, trying to control her anger. “How did you even know my grandma was coming?”

Was he really spying on her grandma now, too?

Lance hesitated, the sudden emptiness in his hand painfully obvious. Seeing the look on her face, though, he forced himself to explain. “My assistant was out on a trip. He just happened to see your grandma leaving the airport.”

He paused, watching her. “Are you saying you think I brought her here on purpose?”

Nathalie let out a short laugh, bitter and harsh. “You mean to tell me you wouldn’t pull something like that?”

For a second, Lance considered her question. Then he actually nodded. “Honestly, you’re right. I probably would.”

Nathalie had nothing to say to that. She didn’t even bother with a response.

Right now, her mind was spinning with something else. Should she tell her grandma about the divorce? It wasn’t something she could hide forever, no matter how much she wanted to protect her.

She looked at Lance and spoke as calmly as she could. “I’ll tell Grandma about the divorce myself. But whatever happened between us before this, I want you to keep quiet about it.”

If Grandma found out about the split, she might just think they’d grown apart. That was hard enough. But if she ever knew about everything Nathalie had suffered, it would only break her heart more. Adelaide was getting older. What if the truth made her sick with worry?

Lance’s expression darkened, trouble flickering in his eyes. “If your grandma finds out we’re divorcing, do you really think she can handle it?”

Nathalie just scoffed and rolled her eyes. “These days, people get divorced all the time. My grandma’s not old-fashioned. She’ll be fine.”

She turned and headed toward the stairs.

Lance’s voice drifted after her, calm and steady. “But what if I’m not okay with it?”

Nathalie stopped and spun around to look at him. “What are you talking about?”

He came closer, his tone careful. “Drop the lawsuit. Once your grandma gets her sapphire earrings, I’ll put her on a plane home. She won’t have to know anything about what’s happened here. If you don’t, she’ll find out everything.”

Nathalie turned away, heading upstairs. In the bathroom, she leaned on the sink, practicing her smile in the mirror until she felt steady enough to go back out.

When she returned, she slid onto the couch beside Adelaide, looping her arm through her grandmother’s. “Grandma, I also ordered that juice you love. It should be here soon.”

Adelaide’s hand reached up to touch her face, worry written all over it. “Nathalie, you look so thin. Is work that hard on you?”

Nathalie blinked, her lashes trembling. “It’s just... taking some getting used to. I haven’t worked in a while.”

Adelaide just sighed and patted her arm. “You need to take care of yourself. Don’t forget to eat properly. Your job isn’t worth your health.”

Nathalie nodded. “I promise, I will.”

Just then, Lance walked back in, his expression perfectly calm, as if nothing had ever happened. Not a hint of that earlier fight.

But Nathalie couldn’t relax. Each second, she was afraid he might say something that would give everything away.
