Dinner was set out, every dish exactly how Adelaide liked it.
The whole time, Nathalie felt tense. She couldn't help glancing over at Lance again and again, waiting for him to say something. If he did, she was ready to step in and shut him down.
But, to her surprise, he didn't bring up anything awkward. He just chatted casually with her grandmother, keeping things light.
After dinner, they all headed back to Lumina Grand. The staff had already set up the guest room, so Adelaide decided to stay the night.
Nathalie told her, “I’m sleeping with you tonight.”
Her grandmother flashed a warm smile. “I’d love that.”
Nathalie went upstairs to grab her pajamas. Just as she was about to step out, Lance showed up, blocking the doorway.
She shot him a wary look. “What do you want?”
Lance folded his arms, his eyes unreadable and voice low. “You kept staring at me during dinner.”
Nathalie raised an eyebrow. “And?”
His eyes dropped to her lips. “Made my mouth dry. I want to kiss you.”
Nathalie stared at him, suddenly speechless.
Honestly, he was unbelievable.
Her face turned cold. “We’re getting divorced, Lance. If you’re feeling lonely, go to Felice. Or any other woman. I’m not stopping you.”
Lance’s expression darkened.
Always pushing him away.
He replied, his voice icy, “Nathalie, I hate when you talk like that.”
A chill seemed to radiate off him, his gaze growing even frostier.
Nathalie almost snapped back, but the look in his eyes made her hesitate. Instead, she swallowed her anger. “It’s late. I’m going to see my grandma.”
Lance stepped closer. “Even if you don’t go right this second, Grandma will just think we’re...busy.”
“Grandma, I just love cuddling with you,” she murmured, nuzzling closer and letting out a sigh.
Her grandmother chuckled, her eyes soft with affection. “Why, sweetheart?”
Nathalie thought about it for a second. “I’m not sure. I just feel safe when I’m close to you.”
Adelaide reached over and gently stroked her head. “Then you snuggle as much as you want.”
After a moment, Adelaide asked, “Nathalie, is there trouble between you and Lance?”
Nathalie’s chest tightened. She never expected her grandmother to read her so easily.
She looked up. “You noticed?”
Adelaide nodded. “Of course. You two used to be glued to each other. You always had these lovesick eyes whenever you looked at him. But today, I could tell. The way you looked at him… it was just cold. Nathalie, did he do something to hurt you?”
Just those few words made something ache inside Nathalie. She dropped her head again, pressing her face into her grandmother’s chest, searching for comfort.
