Adelaide’s face softened with a warm smile as she listened to the person on the phone. She nodded and said gently, “Alright, I’ll wait for you.”
The call ended almost right away.
“Grandma, was that Mom?” Nathalie asked, a little curious.
Adelaide smiled, still looking pleased. “Your mother has someone to clean my place now and then. The cleaner came by yesterday but couldn’t find me, so your mom called to check in. I told her I’m here at your place, and now she wants to meet up.”
She seemed honestly happy about it. “Nathalie, your mom hasn’t called me in ages.”
A strange feeling twisted in Nathalie’s chest, but she tried not to let it show. “I’ll come with you, Grandma.”
“There’s no need for that.” Adelaide waved her hand. “You should go to work. I’ll just see your mom and head home.”
“That soon?” Nathalie couldn’t help pouting. She hated the idea of her grandma leaving already. “Can’t you stay a few more days? I really miss you.”
Adelaide laughed, patting Nathalie’s arm. “You can visit me when you’re not busy. I just don’t feel at home here.”
Nathalie hugged her, only half playfully, trying to change her mind. But Adelaide wouldn’t give in. Nathalie finally had to let it go.
Even so, she decided not to go to work that day. She wanted to stay close, just in case her mom said anything she shouldn’t to her grandma.
So Nathalie took Adelaide straight to the Blair family home. Camilla was back, resting at the house, looking a lot healthier than before.
“Nathalie. You’re back, too.” Camilla’s face broke into a smile when she saw her.
“Mom, sit down, please,” Nathalie said.
A housekeeper brought tea and a tray of fruit. Camilla smiled, trying to put everyone at ease, but Nathalie could still sense the distance between them. It was there, quiet but obvious.
“Why didn’t you let me know you were coming? I would’ve sent someone to pick you up,” Camilla said.
Camilla didn’t push again. Her expression drifted—her mind clearly somewhere else.
Nathalie stayed alert, her guard up. Was her mom still after those earrings? But now that Grandma had them, there was no way she could ask for them back.
Adelaide sipped her tea, her eyes taking in everything with a quiet understanding. When she saw how distant Camilla was, she didn’t seem surprised at all.
After a short while and a couple of cups of tea, Adelaide set down her cup and stood up. “It’s getting late. I should head out.”
“Mom, wait,” Camilla called after her. “At least have lunch with us. Daniel will be back soon. If he finds out you were here but didn’t stay to eat, he’ll blame me again.”
Adelaide looked at her steadily. “And you? Do you really want me to stay?”
“I…” Camilla hesitated, words catching in her throat.
Adelaide gave a quiet, knowing smile. “Camilla, I know you better than you think. You don’t need to pretend anymore. Acting is exhausting, isn’t it? Just let it go.”
