“So, this is your place? Looks amazing.”
Her grandma stepped inside, glancing around and nodding her approval.
Nathalie finally relaxed in her own space, letting her guard down. She poured a glass of warm water for her grandmother, smiling. “Yeah, I only moved in recently. The lake outside is my favorite part.”
Her apartment overlooked a quiet lake, and the view from her balcony was gorgeous.
Adelaide took a sip of water, then looked straight at Nathalie. “So, do you want to tell me what’s really been going on with you lately?”
Nathalie’s eyes darted away. She really didn’t want to talk about it. The embarrassment still stung, and she felt so defeated.
She put on her sweetest voice. “Grandma, it's so late already. Can we please just go to bed? You know staying up isn’t good for you.”
She clung to her grandmother’s arm, acting a little spoiled.
Adelaide could never resist her when she acted this way, so she just dropped the subject.
That night they shared a bed, with Nathalie curled up close, comforted by her grandma’s presence. It didn’t take long for her to fall fast asleep.
The next morning, Nathalie woke up to an empty bed. She shot up and hurried out, only to find Adelaide bustling around in the kitchen.
“Grandma, why are you making breakfast? You should be resting. Let’s just go out to eat,” Nathalie said, coming over.
But Adelaide just shook her head. “Absolutely not. When was the last time you had my cooking? You must miss it.”
“Of course I do, but I don’t want you getting tired,” Nathalie replied, grinning.
Adelaide smiled knowingly. “I knew you’d say that. That’s why I kept it simple and just made your favorites.”
She’d wanted to make more, but Nathalie didn’t have much in the fridge.
Adelaide laughed softly, lost in the memory.
Nathalie listened, but an uneasy feeling crept up inside her. So her grandfather didn’t actually give them to her first? She couldn’t help thinking of what Camilla had said before, even though it sounded ridiculous. If the earrings weren’t meant for her grandma, then why hadn’t he said so? Why did he end up marrying her?
Her mind spun with possibilities. She decided to let it go for now and just smiled warmly at her grandmother. “People were so shy about stuff back then.”
Adelaide nodded and carefully put the earrings back in the box, latching it shut. “Nathalie, I’m just so thankful you found them.”
Nathalie gave her a tight hug. “As long as you’re happy, I am too.”
Just then, a loud ringtone echoed through the apartment. Adelaide fished her phone out of her bag, squinting at the screen before picking up. “Hello, Camilla.”
Nathalie’s heart skipped a beat. Camilla was actually calling her grandmother first for once.
