Lance’s expression grew darker as he looked at her, his gaze locked on her face. “You just want The Blair Group to pull out?”
“That’s right.” Nathalie gave a little nod. “If you’re dead set on helping her, I won’t stop you, but The Blair Group has to withdraw its money.”
“Why aren’t you trying to stop me?” Lance’s voice was lower now, tense.
The air between them thickened, heavy with things unsaid.
Nathalie just raised an eyebrow. “Would it matter if I did? Would you actually listen?”
Lance pressed his lips together and stared her down for a long time. Finally, he said, “Why are you so set on The Blair Group pulling out?”
“She’s just an adopted daughter. Why does she get to use the Blair family’s money?” Nathalie didn’t even try to hide her annoyance.
Lance looked away. “Let’s eat first. Afterward, I’ll think about what you said.”
Nathalie eyed him skeptically. “What’s there to consider? It seems pretty straightforward.”
“So, Nathalie, what are you to me now?” Lance’s tone softened, couching an edge in casual calm. “I only take my wife’s advice, you know.”
Nathalie’s eyes flashed with sarcasm as she looked at him. “Have we signed the divorce papers yet?”
There was a long pause while Lance said nothing.
Nathalie didn’t care one bit. She picked up her chopsticks and started eating. She really was hungry.
Whether the court date came sooner or later, their marriage was as good as done. Humoring him for a little while wouldn’t cost her anything.
Lance kept watching her, his gaze intense. She looked so calm, her usual sharpness tucked away.
Still, he couldn’t help feeling the distance between them growing. It was like she kept drifting further no matter what he did.
But Nathalie honestly didn’t care what he was thinking. When she’d finished her meal, she glanced at him. “So, have you decided?”
“I have,” Lance said.
He’d realized that if he didn’t agree, she’d find some other way, and that could bring in complications he wasn’t ready for… like when Fabian swooped in and flipped William’s attitude overnight.
“Hi, what are you doing?” Nathalie asked as she got closer, curiosity lacing her voice.
The worker looked up, apologetic. “Sorry, I scraped your car. How much is it going to cost to fix?”
Nathalie couldn’t help but smile a little. “It’s all right. It’s just a car. Don’t worry about it.”
She unlocked the door and opened the driver’s side, ready to get in. But just as she was about to, the worker suddenly straightened up and clamped a hand over her face, fast and forceful.
A sharp, overwhelming smell filled her nose. Nathalie barely had time to struggle before her vision faded and everything went dark.
The worker quickly dragged her to the back seat, then got behind the wheel.
As the car rolled slowly away, two bodyguards watching from the shadows noticed what happened. Their faces changed instantly, and they hurried to follow.
One of them snatched up their phone and made a quick call.
“Lance, something’s happened to Nathalie!”
