The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 27

Lance’s eyebrows drew together as he glanced at his phone. “It’s the Adams Estate calling.”

He answered with a brisk, “Hello?”

The butler’s voice came through in a panic. “Lance, you need to get to the hospital. Your grandmother just collapsed!”

Lance’s expression turned serious in an instant. “Alright. I’m coming right now.”

Nathalie scoffed, her voice laced with anger. “You liar.”

He looked at her, his tone unwavering. “My grandma’s in the hospital. We have to go.”

Nathalie turned away from him. “I’m not going. It’s got nothing to do with me.”

“Nathalie,” he said, this time his voice heavy with authority, “we aren’t divorced yet. She’s still family.”

The tension in the car was thick. Nathalie stayed quiet, staring out the window.

Without another word, Lance started the engine and sped toward the hospital.

The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the hallway. The Adams Estate’s butler stood waiting outside the emergency room, worry etched all over his face.

“Lance, thank God you’re here. I was so scared,” the butler said, still a little shaky. “Your grandma fainted suddenly in the garden after dinner. I’ve called Carl and Madonna. Even if they rush, it’ll take three days for them to get here.”

Lance’s jaw was tight. “Have the doctors said anything?”

The butler shook his head. “Nothing yet. They’re still inside with her.”

“Okay,” Lance replied, then pulled out his phone. He wasted no time, immediately calling for the hospital’s best doctors to take care of Leda.

Nathalie stood off to the side, eyes down on her shoes, her delicate features pulled into an unreadable expression.

Thankfully, Leda was saved. It turned out to be an acute stroke, and now she lay weak and pale in bed.

Nathalie nodded slowly. “Sure, Grandma’s mixed up. What about you, Felice? You couldn’t just say no? Or do you just not want to?”

Felice hesitated, biting her lip. “I just… I didn’t want to upset Grandma. She just came to. She can’t handle any stress.”

“She’s barely out of anesthesia. Do you really think she knows what’s going on?” Nathalie’s voice was ice. “Why is it so hard to admit the two of you have something going on? I’m not stopping you.”

She let out a dry laugh. “If Grandma hadn’t collapsed, we’d be divorced already by now.”

“That’s enough,” Lance cut in, his voice low and seething. He strode over, the anger practically radiating off him, eyes dark and unreadable.

“Stop with the nonsense. If you don’t want to be here, I’ll have someone take you home.”

Nathalie didn’t hesitate. She hurled the water in her hand straight at his face.

“You’re the one who made me come, and now you’re blaming me? Lance, you’re just a jerk.”
