Gavin let out a heavy sigh and finally said, “Alright, one more night won’t kill me. If you can, could you bring Lance tomorrow? I really want to ask him when he’s finally going to leave me alone.”
Hearing his words, Nathalie’s eyebrows pinched together. She remembered Gavin telling her that nothing had gone right for him lately and he blamed Lance for it. But she knew Lance better than that. Once someone was out of his life, he wouldn’t waste a single thought on them. In Lance’s eyes, Gavin barely even registered as an afterthought.
So what on earth had Gavin gotten himself into this time?
She paused, thinking it over, then said, “Let’s talk about it properly tomorrow night when we meet.”
“Alright.”
After hanging up, Nathalie let out a slow, heavy breath.
When she got to the hospital, she spotted Camilla looking grim by the door of the hospital room. As soon as Camilla saw her, she strode over, grabbed Nathalie’s arm, and dragged her into the stairwell without a word.
Nathalie tore her arm away. “What the hell are you doing?”
A cold laugh escaped her lips. “Are you going to copy your precious adopted daughter? Maybe throw yourself down the stairs and then blame your own flesh and blood?”
Before her words had faded, a sharp slap echoed through the stairwell.
Camilla’s whole body was shaking with rage. “I wish I’d never given birth to you!”
Nathalie’s ears rang from the hit. Her face went numb, surprise flickering in her eyes as she touched her burning cheek.
“Why did you hit me?”
Camilla’s anger only grew. “Nathalie, you’re such a disappointment.”
“As parents, you’ve disappointed me, too.” Nathalie quickly wiped her tears away. “I even had a DNA test done, just in case. Turns out, I really am your daughter. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when I saw the results.”
She walked out of the stairwell.
She went straight to the bathroom to wash her face, then lingered in the hall for a bit before asking a nurse for a mask—there was no way she wanted her grandmother to see the red handprint on her cheek. Her grandmother was still in recovery. If she got upset now, it could set her back.
When she finally pushed open the hospital room door, she saw Adelaide resting in bed. The feelings Nathalie had just managed to tamp down suddenly bubbled up again.
All she really wanted right now was to curl up in her grandmother’s arms and let herself cry.
