The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 287

The Blair family just kept getting messier.

...

Daniel listened as Camilla laid out her plan, his face twisted with uncertainty. “Are you really sure about this? I mean… she’s your mother.”

Camilla gave a little laugh, but there was no humor in it. “She’s never once treated me like her daughter, Daniel. All she’s ever cared about is my GPA, my test scores. Not once has she asked me what I actually want, whether I even like studying. Only Winnie ever cares about how I’m doing, about my health, about me. Honestly, sometimes I used to wish Winnie was my real mom.”

Daniel looked even more conflicted after that.

Camilla grabbed his arm, locking eyes with him. “Look, she has a ton of assets. If this works, not just the sapphire but everything else will be mine. The company will finally get back on track. Lance won’t be able to mess with us anymore. Don’t you want that? Or do you actually like being blackmailed by him?”

You could see the struggle in Daniel’s eyes. His voice was low and serious. “I… I need to think this through. This isn’t going to be easy.”

Camilla nodded, her expression softening. “Take your time. I’ll leave it up to you.”

...

After chatting with her grandmother for a bit, Nathalie left the hospital and tracked down Nicol.

“Ms. Blair, what can I do for you?” Nicol greeted her with his usual cheerful grin.

Nathalie got straight to the point. “I need you to look into a few things for me.”

Nicol’s smile faded as he got serious. “Just say the word.”

“First, I need you to look into something that happened eight years ago. Hillcrest Village had that earthquake. I pulled someone out—I always thought it was Lance, but now I’m being told it wasn’t him. The whole thing was such a blur, all chaos and confusion… I need to know who it actually was.” Nathalie said this in one breath, almost like she’d been holding it in for ages.

Damaris had tried to find answers before and came up empty. Nathalie wanted to investigate herself, but she just hadn’t had the time—there was always something else demanding her attention. Now, with Garth and Nicol around, she’d seen how good they were. She actually felt hopeful.

He picked up. “Hello? Who is this?”

A calm voice came through the line. “Neely saved your life, right?”

Nicol instantly recognized who it was. He scratched his head. “Yeah, he did. Did Neely tell you to call me?”

“Yeah,” the guy replied, voice steady and sort of distant. “I want to meet. There’s something I need to ask.”

Nicol checked the clock. “Okay, where do you want to meet?”

He jotted down the location, hung up, and drove straight over.

When he pushed open the door of the private room and saw who was sitting there, his jaw about hit the floor. He pointed, eyes wide, and blurted out, “Wait, aren’t you Ms. Blair’s ex-husband?”
