Nathalie let out a helpless sigh and shrugged. “If that’s how you see it, there’s really nothing I can do.”
She stood up and went to sit beside Adelaide. The tough look on her face disappeared and her voice softened. “Grandma, how are you feeling today?”
Adelaide smiled gently, her eyes filled with warmth. “So much better than the past few days.”
Nathalie picked up an apple from the bedside table and started to peel it, completely tuning out Camilla, who was practically fuming on the other side of the room.
Watching them, Camilla felt her anger and frustration bubbling up. Her own mother and her own daughter... and both of them were shutting her out. How could they treat her like this? Not one of them cared about her the way Felice did.
She stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her. All the tension in the air vanished the second she left.
Nathalie lowered her eyes. “Grandma, are you mad at me?”
“You silly child.” Adelaide reached out and gently touched her cheek. “You’re just looking out for yourself. Why would that upset me? Do you think I don’t know why she’s really here, pretending to take care of me? All she cares about is that woman and her adopted daughter. Since she doesn’t care about us anymore, we don’t owe her anything either.”
Nathalie looked up, her eyes bright and tender. “I’ll protect us. I promise.”
She paused for a moment, then said, “Grandma, I met Garth and Nicol. How did you end up knowing such amazing people? You’ve never mentioned them before.”
Adelaide chuckled. “I’m too old to keep up with all the company business now. Garth and Nicol both grew up in an orphanage. I helped them with their education. After they graduated, they came to work for me. They manage the company and handle my assets. I can always count on them.”
Nathalie nodded. “They’ve already helped me a lot since they got here.”
Adelaide gave her an apologetic look. “This is really my fault. I never realized things were so hard for you. If I’d known, I would have asked them to help you sooner.”
Felice quickly called out, “Dad, wait. What if she goes running to Lance again? If he steps in, we’ll just end up losing even more.”
Daniel stopped in his tracks. He remembered all the drama with The Blair Group and how exhausting it had been.
“So what, we’re just supposed to sit here and take it?” Camilla’s voice was tense, her brows pulled tight together.
Felice hesitated before she spoke. “Nathalie doesn’t care about Lance anymore. All that matters to her is herself and Adelaide.”
Camilla’s eyes flashed with a new idea. “Daniel, come out here with me for a second.”
As the two of them left, Felice’s pitiful look vanished. Her face turned cold, shadows flickering in her eyes.
