Fabian grinned. “How’s your grandma doing lately?”
“She’s recovering really well,” Nathalie replied. “I haven’t really thanked you for everything. Do you have time tonight? Let me buy you dinner.”
“If you insist, then yeah, I’m free,” Fabian said, not missing a beat. “How about hot pot? I haven’t had it in forever.”
“Sounds perfect.”
Once they settled the details, Nathalie hung up.
That evening, the moment she stepped into the hot pot restaurant, the rich, mouth–watering smell wrapped around her. She glanced over and spotted Fabian already at a table, waving her over.
“You’re early,” Nathalie said as she sat across from him, a bit surprised.
Fabian gave her a wry smile. “You probably haven’t heard. Lance is coming after me. I’ve been fired from The Green Group. So now, I’m officially jobless.”
Nathalie’s face tightened. “Because you helped me with the divorce, right? I dragged you into all this.”
Fabian shook his head. “That’s only part of it. Remember last time? I
elped you deal with William too. Lance hasn’t forgotten. Some people
st don’t know how to let things go.”
A steely look flashed in Nathalie’s eyes. “It doesn’t matter what he does. He can’t stop me from getting this divorce.”
“That’s what I like to hear.” Fabian snapped his fingers. “As long as you stick to your guns, everything I’ve been through will be worth it.”
He sounded so upbeat, but Nathalie couldn’t shake the guilt that settled inside her. If Fabian had never gotten involved, none of this would have happened to him. A rush of resentment toward Lance bubbled up inside her too.
If he had a problem, he should just face her head–on. Why drag innocent people into it? Honestly, it was just cruel.
The server brought over the steaming hot pot, the twin broths bubbling and sending up an irresistible aroma.
“I’ll tell you after you win the case.” His grin widened. “Once this is over, anything you want to know, just ask.”

The steam clouded her view, and through it, Fabian’s face turned oddly serious as he fished out some fish balls and dropped them into her bowl. After a great meal, warmth spread through her chest. They left the restaurant, and the cool night air felt like a relief after the heat inside.
Fabian’s phone rang. He answered, talked for a moment, then turned to her. “Sorry, something just came up. I have to run.”
