The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 297

Nathalie kind of knew what had just happened. That first bullet? It hit the ground right in front of her. The next one was aimed straight at her, no question. Someone out there was after herand not just by accident.

But who would want her dead? Had she pissed someone off without realizing it? Her brain was a mess, but this was not the time to sort through questions. She felt Lance’s grip on her arm suddenly get tighter and for a second, she thought he might actually crush her ribs.

Lance took a deep breath, then picked her up almost effortlessly and carried her to the car. He yanked the door open and pushed her inside.

Stay down,” he said, his voice low and urgent.

He left her with that and hurried around to the driver’s side, always keeping his eyes on their surroundings.

The nursing home was up the mountain, surrounded by thick forest, and there were barely any cars around. It was peaceful, the kind of place you’d send your grandparents or someone who needed to rest. Not the place you’d expect a shootout.

Apparently, someone disagreed.

Lance couldn’t help remembering last timethe way Nathalie had been drugged and dragged away by a guy pretending to be a janitor. Was this the same group? Were these people all linked somehow?

ol and Aaron had already honed in on whoever was out there. No more pts were fired. Lance slid behind the wheel, started the car, and floored out of there, headed for the city

Nathalie crouched on the passenger side floor, only daring to come up when the car was safely moving. She looked freaked out, her face drained of color and her voice shaking

Who are they?she asked

I don’t know yet,” Lance answered. “But I’ll find out.

Was it the same people who kidnapped me last time?

She was thinking of that too. Lance’s jaw tightened, his voice even heav than before. Maybe, but we can’t be sure right now.

Nathalie couldn’t stop herself from trembling. Her whole life, the worst thing she’d ever gone through was that earthquake. Lately, though, it felt like disaster was always one step away. Her thoughts ran wild as she tried to piece together who could possibly hate her this much. But nobody she’d ever crossed had that kind of power. If they did, they woul have taken her out long ago, not waited until now.

It felt like some huge mystery was closing in, inch by inch, and she couldn’t see a way out.

Once they hit city streets, Lance slowed down. Everything got quiet except for his breathing, which had turned rough and strained.

Nathalie

She turned, startled. He was sweating, hair plastered to his forehead, his face just as white as hers.

h my god, what’s wrong?she cried.

u need to drive. Take me to the hospital,Lance said. Don’t be scared be fine.

He pulled the car over. Nathalie jumped out and rushed to the driver’s side just as he got out, too. When she was close enough, the metallic smell of bloo

Panicked, she checked his back and saw a dark
