Nathalie hovered outside the emergency room, her hands still trembling. Just then, her phone buzzed. It was Nicol.
“Ms. Blair, are you alright? Did you get hurt?”
“I’m okay,” Nathalie said, forcing herself to take a steadying breath. “Wha about you all? Is everyone safe?”
“We’re fine, but those two got away,” Nicol replied, sounding frustrated. “Can you believe it? Guns, right here.”
“Keep digging,” Nathalie said quietly. “Find out exactly who they are.”
“I will,” Nicol promised, his voice turning serious. This felt targeted, and he knew he had to get to the bottom of it.
He paused, then asked, “What about Lance? How is he?”
Nathalie’s voice went quiet and strained. “He got hurt… I don’t know how serious it is. He passed out not long after we got into the car.”
There was a moment of silence. Then Nicol said, “You’re at the hospital

It wasn’t long before Aaron rushed in, looking worried. He spoke to a nurse, asking her to check on Lance.
Turning to Nathalie, his face serious, he said, “Lance has been trying to track down that guy from the last incident, but the guy covers his tracks. We haven’t found anything. Do you remember any details?”
Nathalie closed her eyes, thinking back. “It was late that night. I remember he wore a sanitation worker’s uniform and told me he’d
scratched my car. I wasn’t on guard. As soon as I turned around, he used something–chloroform, I think. When I woke up, Lance was there.”
Aaron took that in, his frown deepening.
Just then, the nurse came out of the emergency room. “The bullet hit Lance’s shoulder. It just missed his lung. He’s still in surgery.”
Aaron nodded. “Thank you.”
Nathalie couldn’t help replaying the scene in her mind. Lance had thrown his arms around her, turned her away from danger. That bullet could’ve hi her instead.
Aaron must have noticed how pale she was. “Nathalie, why don’t you sit
n? Lance is strong. He’ll make it through this.”
