Nathalie just stared, silent.
Chapter 306
This guy was hopeless. He always said he loved her, but the moment she asked him to actually do something, he’d come up with some excuse or another. She was tired of fighting. She’d tried everything, nice words and tough love both, but none of it got through to him. What else could she do?
She got up, ready to leave.
Then she heard him groan from the hospital bed. Instinctively, she stopped and glanced back, eyebrows knitting together. “What’s wrong?”
Lance didn’t answer. He just screwed his eyes shut, his face twisted in pain.
Unable to help herself, Nathalie stepped closer and reached out to touch his forehead, checking for a fever.
In that second, Lance grabbed her wrist and pulled her down into his arms. He held her so tightly, it was almost suffocating.
She tried to wriggle free, voice sharp. “You’re faking it!”
“My back is still healing,” Lance muttered, his grip like iron. “If you struggle, you’ll rip my stitches open.”
The image hit her before she could even think–his back soaked in blood,
him taking a bullet for her…
She stopped fighting, but her voice was cold. “Let go.”
“Nathalie,” he sighed, eyes shut as he breathed in her scent, voice rough with longing, “I haven’t held you like this in so long. I miss you.”
She was stiff as a board in his arms. “Is this how you get your hugs now? By lying?”
Chapter 306
As soon as she said it, his arms tightened even more. She realized he didn’t need her to break his wound open. He’d do it himself at this rate.
“You still care, don’t you?” Lance’s voice was quiet. It wasn’t clear if he was talking to her or convincing himself.
Nathalie said nothing.
Once he finally relaxed his hold, she slipped out of his arms and walked straight out.
The space in his arms felt emptier than ever. He could feel his heart sink as he turned pale, reaching with shaking fingers to press the call button for help.
A nurse hurried in, her voice brisk. “Is something wrong?”
“I think my stitches tore…” Lance’s voice was barely more than a whisper.
The nurse checked the wound and instantly saw the fresh blood. She rushed to grab a doctor and soon there were hands fussing over him, cleaning and stitching everything up again.

Cold wind hit Nathalie the moment she left the hospital. It cleared her head fast, making her wonder why she’d let herself argue with someone who was supposed to be resting.
“Nathalie?”
A familiar voice called out. She spun and saw Freddy coming out of the hospital, looking at her with concern. “Are you okay? Did you get hurt?”
She shook her head. “Just visiting… a patient.”
She looked at him curiously. “What about you? Why are you here?”
Freddy smiled warmly. “What a coincidence. I’m visiting someone too. Maybe it’s fate running into you like this. Do you need a ride, or could you give me one? My driver’s out today and I’ve been stuck with rideshares
