“Hello?”
Nathalie answered, and her voice wasn’t as cool as before.
“Nathalie.”
Lance’s voice was low and a little rough. “Where are you?”
“I’m out, on the road. Is something wrong?”
He paused, just quietly breathing for a second, and then there was a kind of wounded tone in his reply. “You’re not coming to see me?”
Nathalie didn’t say anything.
Her hands tightened around the steering wheel as she stared through the windshield. After a short silence, she finally said, “I’ll come over now.”
Lance’s mood shifted immediately. “Alright. I’ll wait for you.”
After the call ended, Nathalie exhaled slowly, trying to steady herself.
She made a U-turn, heading toward the hospital where Lance was staying.
His hospital room was surprisingly nice. The bed was huge, there was a cozy sofa by the window, and a bouquet of fresh flowers filled the air with a gentle sweetness instead of that harsh disinfectant smell.
When she came in, she spotted Lance propped up against the headboard, a laptop open on a small table in front of him. He was still working, as if nothing could really slow him down.
Aaron was beside him, clearly just waiting for his instructions.
Nathalie paused at the door and tapped lightly with her knuckles. “Aren’t you supposed to be resting? You just got hurt.”
Lance looked up, his eyes deep and bright. A little smile played at the

corner of his lips. “Nathalie, are you worried about me?”
She walked inside, pulled a chair over, and sat down next to him. “You di save my life,” she said, sounding more grateful than she meant to. “Obviously I care, and I do owe you a thank you.”
Lance’s smile grew a little wider. “We’re married, Nathalie. You don’t have to be so polite with me. I’d do anything for you, no questions asked.”
“Oh, is that so?” Nathalie sounded almost bored. “What if I asked you to kick Felice out of The Adams Family?”
Lance froze for a second, his face falling. “Why would you even ask that? Felice is Jasper’s mother. I can’t just throw her out.”
Nathalie gave a dry laugh. “Well, there are things you can’t or won’t do, so maybe don’t promise me the world like it’s so easy.”

Everything Madonna said kept echoing in her mind. Keeping this marriage going was a bad idea, for both of them.
