Madonna’s voice was soft with uncertainty. “Lance, are you still upset about what happened when I signed those papers for you?”

Lance barely reacted. “Mom, that’s over. Let’s not bring it up.”

“I was just so afraid,” she said, her words trailing off as she sighed. “After Jackson… losing him was more than I could handle. I couldn’t face losing you too. But I’ve thought it through now. If you can keep yourself safe, I’ll support whatever you want to do.”

Something flickered in Lance’s eyes. “Then help me get Nathalie back.”

Madonna agreed right away. “Of course. When Jackson’s anniversary comes, I’ll invite her over for dinner. Jackson treated her well, she won’t say no.”

Lance’s eyes turned cold in an instant. His tone lost all warmth. “Alright. Got it. I’m going to hang up now.”

“Alright, honey.”

Lance set his phone down, replaying Madonna’s words in his head.

Nathalie blinked in surprise. “What makes you say that?”

“I’ve got friends overseas keeping an eye out. They mentioned

something. I have a feeling it’s Lance. Do you think he wants me out of the picture? Does he just find me annoying?”

She couldn’t help but laugh a little. “No way. If he wanted to get rid of you, he would’ve done it back when he sent you abroad. He wouldn’t wait this long.”

“Oh, you sure know him well,” Fabian replied, voice laced with a hint of teasing.

“We were together for eight years. I might not know everything, but trust me, I know him,” she said easily. “Either way, you’re overthinking it. And so what if someone is checking up on you? Is there something in your past I should know about?”

Fabian laughed. “Not at all. If I was really that important, would I be back here already?”

“Right. So don’t stress. Are you busy lately?” Nathalie’s voice turned lighter.

“Not too bad,” Fabian replied. “How’s your grandma doing? I might swing by if you’re both around later.”

“She’s recovering really well. Come over, she’d be happy to see you,” Nathalie said, a smile in her voice.
