of relief.
Nathalie slipped her hand free, keeping her tone cool. “Is there anything else, Madonna?”
The chill in Nathalie’s voice clearly unsettled Madonna, but she only frowned a little before saying, “I’ll head out now. Go back to your grandmother.”
Without saying another word, Nathalie turned and walked away.
Madonna watched her leave, irritation flashing in her eyes. Still, the thought that Nathalie would soon be out of the Adams family made her breathe easier.
Lance wouldn’t quit texting her, always from random numbers. It reminded Nathalie of those annoying spam messages and she was running out of patience. Still, remembering what Madonna had told her, she figured maybe she ought to play along for a while. If Lance was going to end up with Felice, he’d first have to let his guard down.
Another message came in. Nathalie glanced at her phone, her lashes lowering to hide whatever crossed her face.
[Nathalie, my wound hurts. Will you come see me?]
She grabbed her phone and set it face down on the desk, then went back to work like nothing happened.
Meanwhile, Lance was recovering fast at another hospital. The scab on his shoulder was nearly gone, but he kept staring at his phone, frustrated at getting no reply. His brows drew together in irritation.
Just then Aaron came in after a quick knock at the door.
Chapter 316
Lance looked up. “What is it?”
Aaron looked serious as he handed over a file. “Lance, I dug up some info on that foreign mercenary group. I found transaction records for those two men. The person who commissioned them is still anonymous, but the lead traces back to Norton Biotechnology. Fabian worked there during all those years he was abroad.”
Lance flipped through the file, his expression growing cold.
Aaron went on. “William’s students have worked at Norton too. And his wife is actually the company’s vice president.”
On the surface, it looked like William and Fabian were just colleagues. But if William had a change of heart, it had to be more complicated than
that.
Lance asked, voice low, “Who started this company? Who put up the money in the beginning?”
Aaron shook his head. “The company’s president is just for show. The real boss is a mystery.”
Lance put the file aside, looking even more troubled. Everything was getting messier. Now they were dealing with international connections, and Nathalie had been attacked.
Was there something unique about her? Maybe it was her family background.
“Do a paternity test for Nathalie and her parents,” Lance said quietly. “Keep it under wraps.”
“Understood.”
Aaron nodded and left.
He’d barely made it out the door when Lance’s phone rang. Madonna’s name lit up the screen.
