“If he wakes up, let me know. I’ll set up the appointment at the Registrar’s

Office.”

Nathalie’s voice was cold as ever. Before Bagot could say anything, she

hung up.

“Nathalie..” Bagot stared at his phone in disbelief. He’d wanted to say more, but all he got was the dial tone.

Was she really this heartless? She just hung up, no hesitation. Lance had sacrificed so much for her, gotten hurt for her again and again, and this was all she gave in return–indifference. After eight years together, she could let go so easily? It stung.

Shoving his phone aside, Bagot glanced over at the hospital bed. Lance was still out cold. Aaron stood nearby, looking just as troubled.

“How did Lance get hurt, anyway?” Bagot asked, eyes fixed on Lance’s left

arm.

Aaron shook his head. “I honestly have no idea.”

Bagot pressed his fingers to his temples. His phone started ringing. It was Madonna.

Clearing his throat, he answered. “Hey, Madonna.”

“Has Lance woken up yet?” Her voice sounded tense.

“Not yet,” he said with a tired sigh. “The doctor said he lost a lot of blood. Nobody knows when he’ll wake up.”

Madonna paused for a second. “I want to come see him.”

“Alright.”

Bagot felt a strange tension in his gut but couldn’t pin it down. A little while later, Madonna walked in, carrying Jasper.

Chapter 331

“Madonna, why’d you bring Jasper? What if he gets scared?” Bagot went straight to her, lifting Jasper gently into his arms.

Lance…?” Jasper peered at the bed, confusion in his big brown eyes.

Bagot did his best to smile. “Lance is just sleeping. When he wakes up, you can ask him to play with you, okay?”

Jasper nodded, eyes wide. “Okay!”

Madonna stood at the side, staring at Lance’s pale face. Her gaze drifted to his injured arm, and something flickered in her eyes–guilt, maybe

regret.

She bit her lip, fighting tears. How could she have done this? How could she have thought any of this was a good idea? The whole plan was meant to keep Lance away from Nathalie, to keep him safe. But now, after everything, he was the one hurt–worse than ever.

Madonna wiped at her eyes, but tears still slipped through.

‘Madonna, do you know something you’re not telling me?” Bagot watched her closely.

She shook her head, not quite meeting his eyes. “No, I just… seeing him like this, it really hurts. I’m scared for him, that’s all.”

There was no way she could admit she’d drugged Lance or explain about Felice. She couldn’t even say it out loud, not to herself, not to anyone.

Bagot seemed to accept it, or maybe he just didn’t want to press her right now. He sat with Jasper and tried to distract him with little games.

Jasper clambered up by the bed, reaching out and gently pushing Lance’s arm. His tiny voice called, “Lance.”

There was no response from the man on the bed.

Madonna scooped Jasper into her arms. “Let’s be quiet for now and keep Lance company. When he’s had enough rest, he’ll wake up.”
