At the voice acting studio.
After her audition, Nathalie was shown to a waiting room. Damaris sat beside her, practically buzzing with excitement. “Don’t be nervous. Seriously, you did amazing. Your voice was so expressive. I was listening just outside the door and I honestly almost started crying. You’re totally going to get this.”
Nathalie wasn’t even nervous at first, but now Damaris’s enthusiasm was rubbing off on her. She pressed Damaris’s hand, trying to settle her nerves. “It’s fine. Let’s just wait for their decision.”
After a few minutes, the project manager and voice director walked in together.
The voice director got right to the point. “Nathalie, is that right?”
“Yes.” Nathalie stood up, smiling and nodding.
He waved her back into her chair. “Go ahead and sit, don’t be nervous. I listened to your audition. You’ve got great emotional delivery, but I can hear that it’s been a long time since you’ve done this kind of work. Your performance still needs a bit more punch.”
Nathalie felt her heart jump. “Yeah, that’s true,” she admitted.
The director and the manager exchanged a look before he continued. “Go home and wait for our call. Unless something unexpected comes up, I’ll be signing you. Your voice suits the female lead perfectly. Just give it a bit of time and the feeling will come back to you.”
Nathalie’s eyes lit up. “Thank you.”
Once they left the studio, Damaris let out a long breath, like she’d been holding it in the whole time. “I knew it! The minute you decided to give this another shot, I just knew you’d do great.”
Nathalie put an arm around her shoulder. “Let me buy you dinner.”
“Deal!”
A few steps later, Damaris glanced over. “Wait, do you even have money right now?”
Nathalie fell silent.
That hit a little too close to home.
Finally, she called him herself. “Hi, I just wanted to ask about…”
The director cut her off with a sigh. “Your voice really does fit, it’s just… you’re missing some experience. I’ve already found someone more suitable.” And then he hung up.
Nathalie just stared at her phone, stunned.
Someone more suitable? That wasn’t what he’d said before.
Damaris burst in not long after, angry and ready to explode. “I can’t believe this! Why is that witch everywhere? You get into voice acting, suddenly she’s a voice actress too. Why does she have to take everything from you?”
Nathalie looked at her, still dazed. “What are you talking about?”
Damaris sat beside her, eyes full of sympathy. “Felice got the role you auditioned for. I asked around. Word is, someone put in a request with the higher-ups at the studio and insisted Felice get the part.”
