The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 361

Nathalie hadn’t slept a wink. She spent the whole night tossing and turning, her throat getting sore and her head growing heavier with each passing hour. By morning, everything felt hazy, like she was walking through fog.

Her phone rang a few times, but she just couldn’t find the energy to pick it up. Barely awake for a minute, she drifted right back to sleep.

ater, a sharp sting on the back of her hand jerked her awake. Opening her eyes, she spotted someone in a white coat, quietly checking the IV drip by her bed.

Ms. Blair, thank goodness you’re awake. You scared me so much. You didn’t come out all morning and I thought you were just sleeping in, so I eft you alone. But when it got to be evening and you still hadn’t shown ip, I came in to check. Turns out you had passed out from a fever!

The housekeeper was hovering at her bedside, relief flooding her face the second she saw Nathalie’s eyes open.

Everything still spun, her throat felt parched and painful, every swallow ike swallowing broken glass.

Thank you,Nathalie managed, her voice little more than a rough whisper.

The housekeeper let out a deep sigh. I’m just glad you’re awake Well see if this fever medicine kicks in soon. If not, you’ll have to go to the hospital.”

Nathalie didn’t want to talk anymoreit hurt too much. She just stayed quiet.

The housekeeper hurried off to find Adelaide

A few minutes later, Adelaide rolled in, sitting up straight in her wheelchair, frowning as she looked over at Nathalie You little

to scare me?

Nathalie forced an apologetic smile. Sorry, Grandma. I didn’t mean to worry you.”

Her voice sounded so scratchy, it almost hurt to hear it.

Don’t talk, sweetheart. Just rest,” Adelaide told her, patting her gently o the leg.

The doctor dropped off some medication before heading out.

Soon after, the housekeeper returned with a glass of water. Nathalie too a few careful sips, soothing her throat a little.

I made you some chicken porridge, the housekeeper said. You really need something in your stomach, or it’ll just get worse.”

Okay,” Nathalie whispered, nodding weakly.

Her head spun, her body felt impossibly heavy, and she could barely kee her eyes open, let alone think about eating. She managed half a bowl before setting the spoon down.

You can take it away, she said softly.

The housekeeper looked unsettled. Ms. Blair, try to eat a little more. You barely touched anything.

I really can’t,” Nathalie replied, shaking her head slowly

Adelaide spoke up then. It’s all right. If you get hungry later, there’s plenty left. Just try to rest, okay?

Obediently, Nathalie lay back against the pillows Grandma, it’s just a cold and a fever. I’ll be fine, really.

Adelaide didn’t seem convinced. Her concern was clear Nathalie, what’s really going on? Leah told me you didn’t look right when you got in last night.”

Leah was their housekeeper too, one who’d been around forever

Nathalie tried to smile, but her lips barely moved. There’s nothing going on. I just got home late, felt exhausted, and must have caught a chill on the way. It’s no big deal, really.

Adelaide’s look said she didn’t believe a word, but she decided not to

bush it anymore.

After a few bites and a sip of water, Nathalie felt a bit stronger and eached for her phone.
