“What?” Nathalie asked, her voice still thick with tears, a bewildered expression on her face.

“I will investigate everything and keep you completely safe,” Lance offered smoothly. “In exchange, you move back to Lumina Grand.”

His dark eyes bore into hers, his tone shifting into something strictly business. “Scrapping the divorce entirely is off the table. I agree this marriage has run its course. But your little predicament has brought a lot of trouble to my doorstep. Saving you over and over has probably put a target on my back, too.”

Nathalie’s hands balled into fists as she weighed his words carefully.

Lance closed his eyes, an undeniable exhaustion settling over his features. “Take your time. Think about it.”

Silence blanketed the hospital room. Outside, the torrential downpour had finally stopped.

As Nathalie’s emotions leveled out, a harsh reality set in: she absolutely did not have the power or resources to uncover the truth on her own.

Nathalie let out a slow, steady breath. “Before I agree to that, let’s sign the divorce papers.”

At that, Lance’s eyes snapped open, his gaze instantly turning somber and dark. “So this is your counter–offer.”

Nathalie held her ground, refusing to look away. “We can’t get the official certificate yet, but we can sign the paperwork. You just said yourself you wanted to end this marriage. Once all this mess is over, we’ll take the signed agreement and finalize the divorce.”

A surge of intense irritation flared in Lance’s chest. He was trying to play the long game, but this woman was downright ruthless.

He was lying here half–dead from taking a knife for her, and she was still laser–focused on divorcing him!

His face remained completely impassive. “Since you’re adding conditions, I’ll add one of my own.”

Nathalie blinked in disbelief. “How is that even…”

“A fair trade, Nathalie. Does this look fair to you right now?” Lance cut her off smoothly, casting a pointed glance down at his bandaged, battered body.

“You are going to take care of me until I make a full recovery, Lance declared.
