Chapter 385
“I have some things to handle on my end, so I won’t be able to go see her right now,” Nathalie said. “Could you keep an eye on her for me?”
“She’s alright, just shaken up. A few days of rest and she’ll be back to normal,” Freddy assured her.
He paused, then added lightly, “Besides, it wouldn’t exactly be appropriate for me to play nurse for her.”
Nathalie facepalmed softly. “Sorry, you’re right. My brain is all over the place today…”
“Did something happen?” Freddy asked, his tone laced with concern.
“Just feeling a little under the weather. I think I need to rest.”
Exhausted and in no mood for small talk, Nathalie made a quick excuse
and hung up.
Nicol looked at her in concern. “Ms. Blair, why don’t you head home and get some sleep?”
Nathalie shook her head. “No. Not until I know he’s going to make it.”
Her emotions were a tangled mess as she stared relentlessly at the ER doors.
Thankfully, less than two hours later, Lance was rolled out. The doctors confirmed there were no fatal injuries. His wounds had been stitched up, and with proper rest, he would make a full recovery.
Inside the private hospital room, the nurses and doctors finally trickled out, leaving Nathalie alone. She sat in the chair beside the bed, staring at Lance’s pale, unconscious face.
Lately, it felt like he was constantly ending up battered and bloody.
And every single time… it was because of her.
Chapter 385
She wanted to bury her face in her hands and block out the memories, but she couldn’t outrun the truth. Image after image flashed in her mind–Lance, covered in blood, throwing himself in front of danger to shield her.
The guilt and confusion were so overwhelming she felt like she couldn’t even breathe.
The room was suffocatingly quiet, the only sound the steady beep of the monitors and her own ragged breathing. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t even notice when Lance’s eyes fluttered open.
“Nathalie.”
The raspy, exhausted whisper snapped her back to reality.
She immediately leaned closer. “How do you feel?”
“Like hell,” Lance muttered. “Everything hurts.”
Nathalie frowned and started to stand up. “I’ll go ask the doctor if they can give you some painkillers.”
But a hand weakly wrapped around her wrist.
His skin wasn’t running its usual fiery heat, and his grip was incredibly frail. She could have pulled away with almost no effort.
But this time, she stayed put.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice barely a murmur.
Nathalie looked down at him. “I’m fine. I stayed in the car the whole time. You took care of them.”
“Was I impressive?” Lance’s dark, striking eyes locked onto hers, holding a rare, gentle warmth.
Nathalie choked up, fighting back the sudden rush of tears. “Lance, we’re getting a divorce. You didn’t have to do that…”
Her voice broke as she spoke, betraying all the lingering terror and sheer uncertainty she felt about her future.
Lance tightened his weak hold on her wrist. “We aren’t divorced yet. As long as you’re my wife, you’re my responsibility. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
