Chapter 400
Listening to her recount the timeline of the paternity test, Lance raised al eyebrow and let out a cynical scoff. “A system error? Wiped data? And you actually bought that?”
Nathalie stared at the test results in her hand, her mind spinning in total bewilderment. “But.., why would he do that? Why would he lie to me? Why would he go out of his way to keep me from knowing I’m not their daughter?”
_ance connected the dots for her. “Right after that first paternity test, you were kidnapped. But the kidnapper didn’t actually do anything to you, did
ne?”
Nathalie slowly nodded.
She had been drugged, and the next thing she knew, she was waking up o Lance. She had absolutely no memory of what happened in between.
Lance’s eyes grew dangerously cold. “That’s exactly when all these accidents‘ started happening to you. You went in for a DNA test, which accidentally exposed your true identity. The guy disguised as a street sweeper was sent specifically to verify who you were. Once they confirmed you were the target, the assassinations began.”
His piercing gaze locked onto her, filled with intense curiosity and suspicion. “Nathalie, what exactly is your true bloodline? Whoever these people are, they are terrified of you. They are absolutely desperate to nake sure you never go back to wherever you belong.”
Nathalie’s hands balled into tight fists “I want to know too”
The corner of Lance’s mouth tipped up, a predatory gleam flashing in his dark eyes. “I have to admit, I’m highly invested in this now. I’ll uncover the truth. But for now, you need to stay as far away from Freddy as possible,
and you need to be extremely careful around Fabian. We don’t know exactly what role Fabian is playing in this conspiracy yet, but one thing i certain–he is deeply involved in these attempts on your life.“.
“I-” Nathalie started, wanting to say more.
But Lance cut her off again. “At the very least, you cannot defend him anymore. You cannot explain away why he handed you a forged DNA te ust to deceive you.”
She fell dead silent.
He was right.
She had been so fiercely certain that Fabian would never hurt her, but now, that blind faith was crumbling.
He had spun a web of lies. He had used the guise of a helpful friend to Jet close to her, all to unearth the secrets of her bloodline–and in doing so, he had opened the door for some truly terrifying people to hunt her
down.
Nathalie took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing her chaotic emotions >ack under control. “I understand.”
A sudden, strange sense of calm washed over her. Maybe she had just been through so much trauma lately that her brain was rapidly adapting o the shock.
She lowered her gaze back to the DNA report, realizing that the invisible, suffocating chains of familial obligation had vanished in an instant.
She wasn’t their biological daughter.
Suddenly, all their blatant favoritism, all the years of unfair treatment. made perfect sense. But did Daniel and Camilla know?
Daniel had just called her, begging her to visit Camilla on her deathbed.
What was going through their minds?
“I need my medicine applied.”
Just then, the deep, husky timbre of his voice yanked her back to reality.
