Holding the files in her hands, Nathalie stood frozen in front of the opeι
cabinet.
In the past, she had always been the one to organize this study. She kn exactly where he kept his favorite books, how he separated standard documents from classified ones, and how he archived his most critical
files.
The layout of this room was practically burned into her muscle memory
Being back in here didn’t feel strange at all. Every corner, every detail, w heartbreakingly familiar.
Because for four years, this place had been her home.
This was where she had lived her entire married life.
Why had she been so terrified of coming back?
Simply because this house held too much history. It carried her joys, her miseries, her growth, and her deepest, most painful heartbreaks.
If she wanted to sever ties with the past, this house was the first thing she needed to leave behind.
And yet, after going around in circles, she was right back where she started.
Pushing down the chaotic swirl of emotions in her chest, she tightened her grip on the folder, sank into the desk chair, and opened it
It was a background check on Fabian’s employment history abroad
As she read through the pages, her brow furrowed There was absolutely nothing suspicious in here
“The day your grandmother was taken, right after the assassins attacked us outside the sanatorium, I had my people run a background check on
everyone connected to the facility. The trail led straight to Fabian. He’s very close with the director. I suspect he was deeply involved in setting up that hit.”
Lance’s voice suddenly broke the silence as he walked into the room.
Nathalie shook her head instantly. “Impossible.”
She closed the file. “He’s been helping me this whole time. He wouldn’t
want me dead.”
Lance’s dark eyes were cold and unyielding. “Why exactly is he helping you? Has he ever asked you for anything in return?”
‘I promised I’d pay him a lot of money,” Nathalie argued.
‘Ha.”
_ance let out a low, mocking laugh. “He doesn’t need your money. He has his own businesses abroad. As a member of the Green Family, his annua dividend payouts are astronomical. Do you honestly believe he’d risk going up against me just for whatever meager amount you promised him? Does that make any sense to you?”
Nathalie’s clear eyes flashed with stubborn defiance. “And you’re basing an accusation of attempted murder entirely on that assumption? Your own file shows absolutely zero motive. You’re just guessing.”
‘Of course he doesn’t have a personal motive. But what it he’s taking orders from the head of his family?” Lance walked over to the desk, pulled open a drawer, and handed her another document. “Nathalie, I think it’s time you properly re–introduced yourself to who you really are.”
Her heart gave a violent lurch.
What did he mean by that?
Staring at the manila folder he held out, a deep sense of dread settled in her stomach. She took it with trembling fingers and flipped it open. The moment she read the first page, her pupils shrank to pinpricks
