Damaris never could keep her thoughts to herself. She blurted out, “So, you’re actually going to go up against your own best friend?”
Fabian looked down for a second, hiding whatever was in his eyes, then glanced back up with a relaxed smile. “Honestly, I just want to help you. I might not know every detail yet, but from what I do know, it’s pretty obvious he made the wrong call between you and Felice. He should deal with the consequences.”
“That’s amazing!” Damaris shot him a thumbs-up. “I really thought you were just like Lance, always backing each other up no matter what.”
Fabian let out a helpless laugh. “Lance is my friend, sure, but that doesn’t mean I have to blindly support everything he does.”
“That’s even more impressive!”
Damaris turned back to Nathalie, all fired up. “Nathalie, come on, go for divorce. Let that loser get as far away from you as possible.”
Nathalie’s heart was racing. She’d been feeling so hopeless, but now it felt like Fabian had turned on a light in the dark.
“Are you… being serious?” She hesitated, nerves running high. “It means you’d be up against Lance.”
Fabian paused, thinking it over. “Let’s keep it under wraps. He won’t know I’m involved. I’ll get someone in touch with you, and before anything gets filed, we’ll keep everything quiet. We only go public once he gets the court summons.”
Nathalie’s eyes brightened. “You really think we can do that?”
Fabian nodded, looking her right in the eye. “Absolutely. But you need to be sure, Nathalie. This isn’t something to take lightly. Are you really ready for divorce?”
“I’ve been sure for a while now,” she said firmly. “I want it over. I don’t ever want to have anything to do with him again.”
“Alright, then I’ll help you.”
The hot pot in front of them bubbled away, filling the air with its spicy aroma. Nathalie’s eyes started to sting out of nowhere.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
...
With things finally moving forward with the divorce, Nathalie felt like she had a reason to keep going again. She started sending out her résumé. If one voice acting company didn’t want her, that was fine, she’d try the next. Whether it was TV dramas, video games, commercials, or animation, she knew she could do it.
One afternoon, she was sorting through her papers when her phone started ringing. She glanced at the screen and saw Daniel’s name.
Immediately, her head began to ache. She pressed her fingers to her forehead and picked up the call. “Hello?”
“Did you forget what today is?” Daniel’s voice was cold and sharp.
Nathalie frowned. “What’s today?”
“You have got to be kidding me. It’s your nephew’s birthday party. The whole family is here, everyone’s waiting, and you just don’t show up. Are you really trying to embarrass both our families like this? Get over here now!”
