The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 49

Nathalie’s voice turned cool, her lips curling into a faint, mocking smile. “I don’t have a sister. Where would a nephew come from?”

Daniel sounded like he was about to blow a fuse. “Are you really going to keep this up? Get over here, now.”

She almost said no right away, but then changed her mind. Her tone softened, just a touch. “I’ll come… if you transfer me some money.”

“What did you just say?” Daniel almost choked. “He’s your nephew.”

Nathalie sounded even colder now. “Please. I can’t stand Felice James and you know it’s not just a recent thing. You want me there, you’d better make it worth my while. Otherwise, I’ll show up and make a scene. It would be your family’s mess, not mine.”

“You… you’re impossible…” Daniel’s voice shook with how angry he was.

Nathalie played with a pen, looking unbothered. She knew Daniel wanted to keep the peace in the family, keep up appearances. He’d give in.

“How much?” The words came out through clenched teeth.

She smiled, like she had all the time in the world. “I’m kind of strapped right now. Let’s say eight million. That should cover it.”

Daniel practically growled. “Fine. The money’s on its way. Just behave yourself when you get here.”

Nathalie let out a soft laugh. “Of course.”

A moment later, the transfer notification popped up, and just like that her mood brightened. Money really could turn a day around.

She got ready quickly and headed straight for The Adams Estate.

Leda’s health had improved a lot, so she was resting at the estate now. There was even a doctor on standby around the clock, just in case.

The party was out on the huge, neatly decorated lawn. Lots of guests had brought their kids along.

People came over to greet her as soon as she arrived. No surprise there—she was still Mrs. Adams.

“Nathalie, you came by yourself? I saw Lance is already here. He’s over there with Felice,” someone said, with a look that was way too interested for casual conversation, eyes bright with gossip.

Nathalie glanced up at Lance. “Are you mad?”

Something darker flickered in his eyes. “Can you please not stir things up today?”

But Nathalie just laughed and stretched out her hand. “Pay up.”

He looked at her, eyebrows lifting. “For what?”

“Hush money.” She blinked at him, her eyes wide and innocent. “You want me to keep my mouth shut? You know what to do.”

Lance just stared at her in disbelief, the muscle in his jaw twitching.

She looked like she was enjoying every minute of his frustration.

His voice was lower, tense. “You know that kind of talk will only hurt your own reputation. Why put yourself through that?”
