Damaris spun on her heel and marched back into the kitchen, tossing the chef’s knife onto the counter. When she walked back out, Bagot was still standing there, staring at her with an intense, unreadable expression that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

She crossed her arms, instantly guarded. “What is your problem?”

Bagot’s hands were balled into tight fists at his sides. It took him a long moment before he finally forced the words out. “Lawrence is a complete psycho. He runs a massive mercenary syndicate overseas. If the price is right, he’ll kill, burn, and destroy without a second thought. You slept with a man like that, and now he’s tearing the city apart trying to find you… Damaris, do you have any idea how much danger you’re in right now?”

Damaris frowned. “Nathalie already warned me. I’ve been incredibly careful. I’m not going to let him find me.”

Bagot lowered his gaze. So, it was true. She really did sleep with

Lawrence.

And now, that lunatic was demanding she take responsibility.

Bagot took several deep breaths, forcing his roaring protective instincts into check. He looked back up at her. “Just hiding isn’t going to fix this. His hands are tied while he’s here in Cabinda, but the second he goes

down.” back overseas, he has unlimited resources to track you

The remaining color drained from Damaris’s face. “Don’t try to scare me. He can’t be that powerful…”

Bagot dropped heavily onto her sofa. “I have zero reason to scare you. I’m just telling you the facts.”

Damaris stood frozen, a cold wave of dread washing over her. If what he was saying was true, then Nathalie’s idea of going on vacation was useless. No matter where she ran, if Lawrence wanted to find her, he

would.

“Then what am I supposed to do?” she whispered, panic bleeding into her voice.

Bagot held her gaze steady. “I have a plan. Call me crazy, but I don’t think he’d relentlessly pursue a married woman.”

Damaris stared at him in disbelief. “Are you saying I need to get married?! Where exactly am I supposed to find a husband on this kind of notice?”

Bagot didn’t blink. “I’ll do it. Our parents already think we’re dating anyway. We might as well just roll with it.”

Damaris’s eyes widened so far they practically bugged out of her head. She marched over and slapped the back of her hand against his forehead. “You don’t have a fever. Why are you talking like a crazy person?”

Bagot grabbed her wrist, his jaw tight. “I’m trying to help you. Who said anything about a real marriage? We draw up a contract, stay married for a year or two, and then file for divorce. By then, Lawrence will have completely forgotten you ever existed.”

Damaris tilted her head, studying his face searching for the punchline. “Are you serious right now? What do you even get out of this?”

Bagot lifted his chin defensively. “I’m just being a good guy, saving a helpless girl. Is that a crime?”

She yanked her hand free. “The fact that you want nothing out of it makes it even more terrifying. What if this is some massive scheme to ruin my life? Get out. Thanks for the brilliant suggestion, but I’ll think of

something else.”

Grabbing his arm, she forcefully dragged him toward the front door.

Bagot stumbled. “Hey, wait! What else is there to think about? Who else is going to fake-marry you? I’m literally volunteering, why don’t you trust me? What could I possibly scheme to take from you? What do you even
