“Who are you?”

Startled by the sudden, commanding voice behind her, Sophia jumped. She whipped around, clutching the bundled bedsheets to her chest, her pale face completely devoid of color.

“M-Mr. Adams… It’s me, Sophia…”

Lance’s dark brows drew together in a harsh frown. “What are you doing in here?”

Sophia shrank back, intimidated. “Nathalie asked me to change the bedsheets. I’m almost done.”

Lance’s eyes swept over her critically. “Then why are you wearing her clothes?”

Sophia was wearing one of Nathalie’s shirts-a crisp white button-down with delicate embroidery on the cuffs. It was simple but elegant. When Nathalie wore it, she looked effortlessly sophisticated. But on Sophia, the shirt swallowed her small frame entirely, looking painfully awkward and out of place.

“Because I gave it to her. Do you have a problem with that?”

Nathalie’s voice drifted in from the direction of the en-suite bathroom. She stepped out, wrapped tightly in a thick bathrobe. She had clearly just finished showering, her skin glowing with a faint, radiant flush.

Her clear eyes locked onto Lance, entirely unamused.

Sophia looked like she was on the verge of tears. “N-Nathalie, I’ll go change right now. This shirt really doesn’t suit me anyway. I’ll give it back to you.”

Seeing the younger girl panic, Nathalie immediately shot Lance a lethal glare. “Who told you to just barge into my room? You scared half our

lives out, and instead of apologizing, you start barking at us?”

Lance arched a brow. “Barking at you?”

“You were hostile to her,” Nathalie corrected sharply. “She’s my friend.”

Lance’s expression remained completely indifferent. “What does that have to do with me? I’ve always been cold to people who don’t matter. You should know that better than anyone.”

He took a deliberate step toward her. “Or are you just using this as an excuse to vent your own frustration at me?”

Nathalie let out a cold scoff. “Do I really need an excuse to be frustrated with you?”

Lance was momentarily rendered speechless.

Standing off to the side, Sophia felt suffocated by the intense atmosphere between them. She sped up her movements, practically throwing the new pillows onto the bed before hugging the dirty laundry and bolting from the room.

The second she crossed the threshold, the oppressive weight lifted off

her chest.

Mr. Adams treated Nathalie so differently compared to the rest of the

world.

When he looked at Nathalie, there was an underlying, undeniable warmth. When would someone ever look at her with that kind of gentleness?

“Didn’t I set a strict rule that she’s not allowed on the second floor after nine o’clock?” Lance asked, breaking the silence.

Nathalie sat down in front of her vanity mirror, picking up her moisturizer. “What? Are you worried she’s going to seduce you or something?”

Lance fixed her with a dark, smoldering gaze. “Aren’t you?”

Hearing that, Nathalie let out a dry laugh. “Did you forget that I literally hired a woman for you before? Why would I be scared of-”
