The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 52

The Adams family’s butler took one look at the chaos brewing and knew it was time to step in. He politely ushered all the guests out of the house, leaving behind a heavy silence.

Leda heard the commotion from down the hall, and she looked so shocked she nearly lost consciousness. She hurried over in her wheelchair, her hands clutching the armrests. “How’s my great-grandson? Tell me he’s alright,” she demanded, her voice trembling.

The butler bent down to speak gently. “He’s on his way to the hospital, Leda. Please, don’t worry too much. Someone caught Jasper before he fell. He should be okay.”

Leda’s hand shook as she pointed accusingly at Nathalie. “You wicked woman! Look at what you’ve done!”

Lance entered the room with long, purposeful strides. Word of what had happened had already reached him, and as he took in the scene—everyone’s eyes filled with cold contempt for Nathalie—he stepped in front of her, shielding her from their stares.

“Who said they actually saw her kick him?” he asked, his voice calm but carrying an edge that made everyone stand a little straighter.

His sharp gaze swept the living room, weighing on everyone’s shoulders. The maid who’d spoken out before hesitated, shifting nervously before stepping forward. “I—I was standing at the bottom of the stairs. I think I saw Nathalie kick Jasper…”

“You think?” Lance shot back, his brows drawing together as the intensity in the room ramped up. “You’re not even sure, and yet you’re accusing her like it’s a fact?”

The maid shrank under his scrutiny. “I… I might be mistaken…”

Before she could finish, Leda cut in sharply. “If it wasn’t her, then who? Look at the trouble she’s caused these days. Lance, why are you still defending her?”

A chill settled over Lance’s face. “Because I know her. She isn’t that kind of person, and you all know it.”

Across the room, Felice was in tears. “Lance, she keeps misunderstanding things between us. That’s why this keeps happening…”

Lance turned to her, his jaw set and his eyes hard. “Your son is hurt. Why are you still here arguing instead of being with him?”

Felice’s face went pale. This wasn’t the response she’d expected, not when she’d always thought Lance would take her side. Didn’t he care more about Jasper than anyone else? Why wasn’t he comforting her?

“It was me.”

The room went still. Just as the tension was about to break, Nathalie’s voice rang out quietly but firmly.

Lance spun around, shock etched across his face. “Nathalie, don’t say that. Don’t lie for anyone!” His eyes searched hers, desperate for her to take it back.

Inside, Nathalie felt like she was being ripped apart. Her cheek stung, a handprint still bright and raw. Her eyes glimmered with tears she refused to shed. The man protecting her was standing right there—but his heart was always divided. No matter what, he kept looking back at that mother and her son.

It hurt more than she could put in words.

But she understood, in that moment, this was her chance. With everyone watching, with the Adams family’s reputation on the line, maybe she could finally end it. If they all blamed her, maybe he’d finally agree to the divorce.

All she had to do was let the story unfold, and she would be free.
