Everyone turned their eyes to Nathalie, standing there at the top of the stairs.
“Isn’t that Jasper’s aunt? Why is she involved?”
“Oh my god, she’s actually that cruel? Who does something like that to a child?”
“I heard it’s because she got jealous over Lance and Felice. She went crazy and took it out on the kid.”
The whispers grew louder, people pointing and casting judgmental glances at Nathalie.
Felice rushed over, glanced at Jasper lying unconscious, then fell to her knees right in front of Nathalie.
“Nathalie, if you’re angry, be angry at me. Hurt me if you want, just don’t take it out on my son. He’s only three. He’s just a baby and doesn’t know anything. He’s totally innocent!”
She was crying so hard her face was streaked with tears. “Lance and Jackson were really close, and after Jackson passed away, Lance started visiting Jasper because he felt sorry for him not having a dad. I was never even there when Lance visited. I don’t know where you heard there was something going on between us. It’s all just talk. I loved Jackson with all my heart. I’d never betray him, never.”
Felice’s voice broke as she sobbed out her pain, then she lowered her head, pressing her forehead to the floor at Nathalie’s feet.
“Nathalie, please, whatever issues you have, take them out on me. Please, just don’t hurt my son. He’s the only child I have left from Jackson. He’s my entire world. Please, I’m begging you, just let him go…”
Over and over, Felice kept bowing her head, pleading and apologizing, her voice echoing through the room. Everyone around them listened closely, taking in every word she said.
“So it was just Lance checking in on Jasper. Nathalie overreacted for nothing.”
“That poor kid. Lost his dad before he was even born, and now this happens.”
“Honestly, what’s wrong with her? Thinking her husband has something going on with Felice. She must be out of her mind.”
The people in the room now turned to Nathalie with open contempt and disgust. The whole situation felt like it was on the edge of falling apart.
His outburst seemed to silence any doubt. The crowd immediately made up their minds and pinned the blame on Nathalie.
“I didn’t do it!” Nathalie shouted, her cheek burning from the slap. She couldn’t believe this was happening. Being framed like this was more than she could stand.
“I might not like her, but I would never do something so awful to a child!”
Daniel scoffed at her. “You’re always unreasonable, always causing a scene when things don’t go your way. What wouldn’t you do at this point?”
“I’m your daughter. You seriously don’t believe me?” Nathalie’s whole body shook, a biting cold settling in her bones.
“I wish I didn’t have a daughter like you.”
Daniel didn’t even look at her as he turned to Felice. “Stay with Jasper. If anything happens to him, I swear I won’t let Nathalie get away with it.”
