Now that he was dead, all those past memories died with him.
Nathalie suddenly found herself wondering if holding onto the hatred was even worth the energy anymore.
A hand waved back and forth in front of her face, snapping her out of her daze. She blinked and saw Octavia looking at her with an amused smile.
"Where did you go just now? You looked a million miles away."
Nathalie lowered her eyes, her long lashes fluttering slightly. "I was just thinking about all the times I almost died because of him. And yet, in the very beginning, we were friends."
Octavia blinked. "He's dead. Are you actually sad about it?"
"I'm just wondering what exactly Sylvie Winter did to earn that kind of fanatical loyalty," Nathalie said softly, her fingers curling into tight fists at her sides.
Octavia clapped a hand on her shoulder. "Whatever she did, the bottom line is that he hurt you over and over again. You shouldn't waste a single tear on him. He got exactly what he deserved. The moment he decided to put a bullet in you, you should have realized that your friendship was already dead."
Nathalie's breath hitched. She looked up at Octavia and slowly nodded. "Yeah. You're right."
Octavia's lips curled into a sharp smile. "Don't let yourself drown in pointless emotions. They'll only cloud your judgment and make you hesitate when it matters most. What you need to do right now is lock those feelings away and harden yourself. After all, you're going to war with the Winters."
"Octavia."
Lance's voice suddenly cut through the air, carrying a distinct chill. "Stop filling her head with that garbage."
Octavia didn't back down. "Am I wrong?"
Lance closed the distance and stepped protectively in front of Nathalie. He spoke in a dangerously calm tone. "She shouldn't mourn Fabian, that much is true. But she doesn't need to 'lock her feelings away'. She's still human."
"Ha..."
Octavia threw her head back and laughed, giving him a knowing, mocking look. "You're just terrified that if she shuts her emotions off, she won't care about you anymore. Isn't that right?"
Lance's eyes turned instantly glacial.
"Wow, hit the nail right on the head, didn't I?" Octavia looked incredibly entertained by this revelation. "If you're so scared of losing her now, what the hell were you thinking before?"
Lance's glare darkened even further, his voice dropping to a menacingly low register. "Do you want the rest of your payment or not?"
