"Jasper has been looking for you," the maid explained anxiously. "When he woke up and realized you were gone, he started crying uncontrollably."
Nathalie froze, her expression blank for a few seconds. She pointed at herself. "Jasper is looking for me?"
The maid nodded frantically. "Yes, yes. Please go check on him."
Nathalie was baffled. The kid had always been terrified of her. Over the last few days, he had managed to overcome it slightly, but only to the point of not being scared—nowhere near the level of actually wanting her around.
She instructed, "Go calm him down first. I'll wash up and head right over."
"Right away."
When Nathalie pushed open the door to the child's room, she was met with Jasper's tearful, eager gaze. The moment he saw her, he tossed aside his ugly stuffed toy and reached out his little arms. "Nathalie, hug."
Nathalie was even more surprised now, but who could resist a crying child begging for comfort?
She walked over, scooped him into her arms, and asked, "What are you crying for?"
Jasper clung to her tightly, sniffling. "I... I thought you didn't want me anymore. I thought you hated me..."
As he spoke, he worked himself up again, fat tears rolling down his cheeks.
Nathalie hurriedly tried to soothe him. "No, no, that's not it at all. I just went back to my own room to sleep."
She paused, adding softly, "Your Uncle Lance will always want you."
Jasper, however, fixated on the wrong part. "So you don't want me?"
Nathalie was stumped.
Could she really say she didn't even want his uncle?
Just as she was struggling to find the right words, Lance walked in.
"You little brat, monopolizing my wife first thing in the morning. What's the big idea?"
Lance walked over and smoothly plucked Jasper out of her arms.
Nathalie let out an immense sigh of relief.
Jasper sniffled again. "Nathalie doesn't want me, and she doesn't want you either."
Nathalie was speechless.
