Suppressing her rising excitement with everything she had, Damaris offered a stiff nod. "Yes, I will."
To her horror, the moment the words left her mouth, Lawrence went completely still.
He suddenly grabbed her face with both hands, his terrifying blue eyes scanning every single micro-expression, searching for the slightest hint of deceit.
A second later, a chilling smile stretched across his lips. "Baby... my sweet baby. You've learned how to lie. You've been terrified of me since the moment you got here. You've done nothing but look for an exit. How could you possibly miss me? You're lying just to appease me. You're not being a good girl anymore."
Damaris's eyes widened in sheer shock. She thought she was feeding him the delusions he wanted to hear, completely unprepared for him to instantly rip through her facade.
"I didn't..."
"Shh!"
Lawrence pressed a finger to her lips, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "Baby, I know you inside and out by now. You're a terrible actress. Just be yourself. And abandon whatever dangerous little thoughts are swimming around in that head of yours. The nearest country is a three-hour flight from this island. You can't escape."
All the color drained from Damaris's face in an instant.
Seeing her raw terror, his mood soured immediately. His expression darkened, and he abruptly smashed his mouth against hers in a brutal, punishing kiss.
He kissed her with ruthless, devastating force, devouring her completely and suffocating her until she was entirely limp and deathly pale. Only then did he finally pull back.
"Wait here like a good girl until I get back. Do not try anything stupid, or I will be very upset," Lawrence warned, gripping her face as he stared dead into her eyes. "Baby, if you do something that pisses me off, I will chain you to the bed and take you every single day until you're begging me to stop."
A violent shudder wrecked Damaris's frame. She couldn't force a single word past the lump in her throat.
In her eyes, he was completely, irreversibly insane!
"Don't be scared. As long as you're a good girl, I would never do something like that to you," Lawrence cooed, his gentle demeanor instantly snapping back into place as he pressed a terrifyingly tender kiss to her forehead. Then, without another word, he turned on his heel and strode out of the living room.
Damaris remained glued to the couch. It took her several long minutes to regain control of her own limbs. She wrapped her arms tightly around her knees, her complexion ashen. Even after a month in this hell, she still felt like she was trapped in a relentless nightmare.
The maid dutifully fetched several bottles from Lawrence's prized private cellar. Glancing at the exorbitant vintage labels, Damaris felt a momentary sting of disbelief.
Dumping tens of thousands of dollars' worth of wine into a bathtub was borderline psychotic.
Whatever.
It wasn't her money anyway!
"That's enough. Get out. I'll handle the rest," she snapped at the maids, gesturing vaguely at the two dozen bottles lined up on the marble floor.
The maids bowed obediently and vacated the bathroom.
Damaris immediately bolted the door and cranked the faucets to full blast, drowning out any potential noise. She began emptying the wine into the tub, using a hairdryer to quickly dry the insides of the empty bottles. Then, she took out a stack of paper slips she had secretly prepared.
She shoved a slip into every single bottle. Written on each was her name, phone number, and her friend's emergency contacts. She could only pray that some passing samaritan would spot one, read the message, and alert her loved ones to stage a rescue.
