The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 59

The call came from Lance’s mom, Madonna.

“Nathalie, are you at the courthouse?” Madonna sounded rushed, almost panicked.

Nathalie gripped her pen tighter and answered softly, “Yes, Mom.”

“No, absolutely not. You two can’t get divorced,” Madonna’s tone sharpened. “Even if you’re serious about this, it can’t be now.”

Nathalie paused, letting out a long breath. “Mom, I just don’t want to wait anymore.”

“I don't care, I don’t agree. Both of you need to come home. How could you even think about ending your marriage without talking to us first? What, did you think your family would just check out for good and stop caring?” Madonna’s anger snapped right through the phone. She hung up before Nathalie could say a word.

At the same time, Lance was on the phone with his father, Carl.

“Come home right now or stop calling me your father.”

Carl hung up the moment he finished, leaving no room for argument.

Lance stood up and headed for the door.

“Sign the papers before you walk out,” Nathalie said, grabbing his arm.

He turned to face her, his eyes clouded and a little cold. “My parents flew back. My dad said if I don’t come home, he’ll break my legs.”

Lance glanced at her phone. “My mom called you, didn’t she? Honestly, she’s always been decent, right? How about we listen to what they have to say first?”

Nathalie clenched her jaw, but she didn’t refuse him. Deep down, she knew Madonna really had treated her well.

But the truth was, Lance’s parents were almost never home. They volunteered abroad, and they rarely spent more than a few weeks a year at The Adams Estate. Even this time they’d come back later than planned, only hurrying home when Leda got sick. Nathalie never expected to run into them at such a pivotal moment.

He didn’t say another word, just trudged off toward the study.

Madonna got up and moved to Nathalie, taking her hand gently. She didn’t sound stern anymore. Her voice dropped, kind and sweet. “Nathalie, you look like you’ve lost so much weight. Come upstairs and talk to me, okay? Tell me what happened.”

Nathalie’s breath caught and suddenly her eyes stung.

Leda scoffed, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink. “She’s the one making this a big deal, demanding a divorce, even trying to hurt Jasper. You know, Jasper is your grandson. Or doesn’t that mean anything to you?”

Madonna just shook her head. “I don’t believe Nathalie would ever do something like that.”

Leda pointed accusingly at her. “But she confessed herself!”

Madonna’s expression grew complicated. “Mom, did Nathalie really confess, or did something else happen? Maybe you should look past the surface and see what’s really going on here. Or do you want me to spell out what your precious grandson did?”
