The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 604

Nathalie's expression remained neutral. "You just need to stay by your Uncle Lance's side."

"But..." Jasper's little face contorted with hesitation. "I'm too small. I can't stay with Uncle Lance forever. You're his wife, you're the one who has to stay with him always."

The tiny boy spoke with a fluency and sharpness that was far beyond his nearly four years of age.

Nathalie offered a gentle smile. "Jasper, not everyone gets to stay with someone else forever. We're all independent people, and we have to learn to be okay on our own."

Jasper looked at her with pure confusion, just blinking his big eyes.

"Alright, you don't need to understand this right now. You will when you're older." Nathalie smiled, exchanged a few more casual words, and hung up the phone.

Nathalie looked out the window. When she first arrived in this city, she had felt a sense of anticipation. But now, for some reason, Lance's pale, sickly face kept flashing through her mind.

He was perfectly fine yesterday.

He just caught a draft. How could a simple cold get this severe?

Knock, knock!

Her chaotic thoughts were interrupted by a rap at the door.

"Who is it?" she asked cautiously.

"It's me, Nathalie."

Nicol's voice filtered through the door.

Nathalie opened it, looking at him in confusion. "Is something wrong?"

Nicol pointed to the room next door. "Mr. Adams is looking for you. He has something to discuss."

"Alright."

Nathalie nodded. "Okay."

If he decided they needed to leave, he must have noticed something. Staying here was definitely unsafe.

Nathalie turned to head back to her room and saw Nicol still standing there, looking utterly devastated, opening his mouth to speak as she approached.

"We'll talk about this later," Nathalie told him flatly. "Whatever deal you made with Lance, you were at least trying to protect me, right?"

"Yes, I've always been protecting you," Nicol answered without hesitation.

"Good. That's enough for now." Nathalie nodded, went into her room, and packed her things.

She packed lightly, fitting everything into a small bag. When she returned to Lance's room, he was still coughing, his face alarmingly pale.

She stared at his pallor, hesitating for a long moment.
