The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 605

"Don't you need to rest?"

Lance looked at her, circling back to his earlier obsession. "Are you worried about me?"

Nathalie fell silent.

She really shouldn't have asked.

Clearly, he was fine enough if he had the energy to keep obsessing over that question.

She simply looked away, refusing to say another word.

A soft sigh escaped the man's lips, followed by a helpless murmur. "Could it really kill you to lie to me just a little?"

"I'm not like you," Nathalie shot back. "I don't make a habit of intentionally deceiving people."

Lance had nothing to say to that.

The room fell into a heavy silence. Two minutes later, he finally spoke. "Let's go. The car is out front."

Nathalie nodded and walked out of the room.

They were already checked out. A car was waiting at the entrance, and the moment they got in, they sped straight toward the airport.

Nathalie looked out the window. She had just arrived in this city and barely had a chance to explore before being forced to flee.

A deep unease settled in her gut. She could only pray that they would make it out of this alive, because she was nowhere near ready to face the kind of danger that was tracking them.

The helicopter was fully prepped. They boarded immediately. As they lifted off and the city skyline shrank beneath them, Nathalie pulled her gaze back inside the cabin.

That was when Lance handed her a small case.

"What is this?"

He pulled out a Kevlar vest and handed it to her. "Put this on. It'll stop anything from a distance."

"What about you?" Nathalie asked, taking the vest.

"I'm wearing one too," Lance replied smoothly. "You still haven't forgiven me. I'm not going to die that easily."

Nathalie lowered her eyes, refusing to respond to his bait.

She slipped the bulletproof vest over her tank top, then threw her button-down shirt over it. Only then did she speak, her voice slow and measured.

"Lance, we had a deal. Once my situation is resolved, we get a divorce."

She looked at him. "You agreed to it. You don't get to break your word."

Lance looked away, staring out the window. "We aren't there yet. Everything is still up in the air. You can't blame me for holding on to a shred of hope."
