The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 611

Mist blanketed the jungle at night. There had been a small trail at first, but the deeper she went, the thicker the undergrowth became.

Nathalie walked very slowly. She was terrified of being impaled or tripped by some stray branch in the dark.

Unfamiliar with the terrain, she was navigating purely by touch.

The constant chirping of insects and birds echoed in her ears, accompanied by the dreaded possibility of venomous snakes or other creeping reptiles.

This jungle was incredibly dangerous.

But she didn't dare stop.

She had no idea if her pursuers were right behind her, but she had to find a spot that looked safe enough to hide.

She had to gamble on this.

That suffocating feeling of being watched clung to her like a shadow. Even in the pitch-black jungle, she could feel it clearly.

Heavy, ragged breaths escaped her lips, and her face was slick with sweat.

Finally, she reached a relatively open clearing and stopped, collapsing onto a large rock.

Her backpack held water and protein bars.

She figured that if she could somehow take out the people tailing her, she could leave.

Her supplies were enough to last her a few days.

Assuming she wasn't killed first.

Taking a sip of water, she tilted her head back to check the night sky, only to be met by a dense canopy of leaves.

Only tiny slivers of starlight peeked through the narrow gaps.

Nathalie was terrified out of her mind.

But she couldn't let so many people die just for her sake.

Even though she was terrified of dying.

Seeing others get hurt or killed because of her would be even worse.

She was just about to fire—

"Ms. Nathalie!"

Nicol's voice cut through the silent jungle, deliberately hushed but loud enough for her to hear.

Nathalie's eyes went wide with shock. She didn't dare lower the gun, but her finger eased off the trigger.

As Nicol stepped closer, his silhouette sharpened until she could make out his features.

It really was Nicol, not an imposter.

Nathalie finally lowered the weapon and stepped out from behind the tree. "Why did you follow me?"

Seeing her completely unharmed, Nicol let out a massive sigh of relief. "I couldn't just let you run off alone."

"You need to leave, right now," Nathalie insisted. "If you stick with me, it's going to get you killed!"

Nicol flashed a wide grin. "My whole career has been living on the razor's edge. I'm not afraid, Nathalie. I had my reasons for working with Lance before, but I did betray you back then, and I want to make up for it. Besides, you're Adelaide's granddaughter. I can't just stand by and watch you get hurt. How would I ever explain that to Adelaide?"
