The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 612

Nicol's smile was entirely genuine, devoid of any pretense.

In the darkness, she couldn't make out every detail of his face, but hearing his earnest words, a wave of profound emotion washed over her.

Warmth bloomed in her chest, chasing away a fraction of her anxiety and panic.

She took a deep breath before speaking. "Thank you."

Nicol waved a hand dismissively. "Don't mention it. Come on, I'll take you to a safe spot for the night. You don't have experience sleeping out here; it's too easy for things to go wrong."

Nathalie nodded, then asked, "Did you notice anyone else on your way here?"

"Yeah," Nicol confirmed. "They entered the jungle too. I managed to throw them off the scent, but I have a feeling they'll catch up soon."

Her heart instantly tightened. She didn't say another word, simply following closely behind Nicol.

With Nicol leading the way, their pace picked up significantly. Nathalie no longer had to constantly scrutinize every shadow.

After walking for nearly an hour, Nicol scanned the area. "Let's rest here for a bit."

Nathalie was so exhausted she couldn't even speak. She slumped directly onto a dry, fallen log.

"I'm going back to mess up our tracks so they won't be able to find us for a while," Nicol said, his expression serious. "Wait here for me."

"Okay."

Nathalie gave a tired nod.

Nicol turned and vanished into the brush. Without her slowing him down, he moved much faster.
