Lance and Nicol both surged forward, their eyes blown wide with absolute horror, unable to comprehend the nightmare unfolding before them.
But a second later, they froze in their tracks.
The echoing gunshots faded, and the person crumpling to the earth wasn't Nathalie. It was her captor.
The assassin's eyes were wide with shock in his final moments.
He seemed utterly baffled as to how, in a situation he had completely controlled, he was the one taking a bullet.
He slumped into the dirt, and the jungle plunged into a split second of dead silence.
Nathalie huddled into herself, convinced she was dead, only to realize she hadn't suffered a single scratch.
She whipped her head around to look down at the dead man at her feet, then traced the trajectory backward. Not far into the tree line, a man was lowering his rifle.
His face was heavily obscured by camo paint, making his features impossible to read, but his eyes were brutally cold. He cast one icy glance at Nathalie, then turned on his heel to walk away.
It was the sniper who had spotted her earlier!
The one in the tree who had aimed dead at her, refused to pull the trigger, and walked away.
He was the one who just saved her life!
"Wait!"
Seeing his silhouette retreating further into the trees, Nathalie spun around and started running after him.
Bang!
A bullet tore into the dirt inches from her toes, burying itself deep into the muddy soil.
Nathalie slammed on the brakes, the last bit of color draining from her face.
The sniper had fired a warning shot to stop her from following. A second later, he melted entirely into the shadows of the jungle.
"Nathalie!"
A desperate, panicked voice shouted from behind her, and in the next second, she was swept into a crushing embrace.
"Thank you for coming to save me."
The next second, his arms locked around her with even more crushing force.
This time, they were pressed seamlessly together. Their heartbeats seemed to sync into a single, frantic rhythm. His ragged, scalding breath swept across the crook of her neck, burning her skin.
"Nathalie, I want to strangle you," Lance rasped, his voice raw with emotion. "How could you be so reckless? Running out here alone—were you trying to get yourself killed?"
Nathalie closed her eyes, gasping out, "If you don't loosen up, I'm actually going to die right now."
Hearing that, Lance finally forced his arms to relax. He watched as Nathalie took several deep, desperate breaths; he really had been crushing her.
"Boss, I lost him."
A bodyguard sprinted back to them, panting heavily. "That guy is unnaturally fast, and his anti-tracking skills are top-tier. He lost me almost instantly."
"Understood."
Lance gave a curt response. He finally released Nathalie entirely, but his eyes never once left her face.
