The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 621

"Keep tracking them down. Don't let a single one slip through the net."

"Yes, Boss."

Nathalie felt completely on edge under Lance's searing gaze. She turned her face away, trying to push him back.

"My chest hurts," he murmured a second later.

Nathalie immediately stopped struggling. Frowning, she asked, "Is your wound getting worse?"

"Nathalie."

He didn't answer her question. Instead, he stared at her face with piercing intensity, calling her name.

Nathalie's heart skipped a beat. Avoiding his eyes, she said, "This isn't the place to talk. We..."

"Why did you choose to leave on your own?" he demanded, his arms locking around her. His gaze was stubborn, effectively cutting off her escape.

Her eyelashes fluttered, but she stayed silent.

"Do you actually care about me? You've accepted me again, haven't you?" Lance couldn't wait for her response. With every word, his eyes brightened, as if fresh life had been breathed into him.

"You're overthinking things." A gentle breeze swept past as Nathalie's calm voice broke the tension. She met his gaze, her eyes completely devoid of emotion. "I just didn't want to drag innocent people down with me. Not only did I keep this from you, but I also told Nicol to stop the other guards from following me. I even told him to stay behind, but he insisted. I didn't want anyone's blood on my hands. I..."

Before she could finish, Lance ducked his head and crushed his lips against hers.

Before Nathalie could react, she was tackled to the ground. Panic seized her as she looked up and saw Felice James. Felice yanked a packet of powder from her pocket and hurled it straight at Nathalie's face!

In a flash, Lance threw himself forward, kicking Felice away. But the packet had already burst open. A sudden gust of wind swept the toxic powder directly over them.

"Don't breathe!" Lance yelled. He pinned Nathalie to the ground, shielding her body with his own and covering her mouth and nose.

But the powder flew right into his eyes. Almost instantly, a searing, blinding pain ripped through his vision.

"Lance!" Nathalie screamed his name as she saw blood seeping from the corners of his eyes. Then, a horrific burning sensation clawed at her own throat, sending her into a violent fit of coughing.

"Die! Hahaha! Both of you, go to hell!" Felice shrieked. "This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, I'd still be the darling of the Blair family. I'd still be Mrs. Adams. I had a husband who loved me, a beautiful son. My life was perfect! You ruined everything, so now you can both die!"
