The grim look on Aaron's face deepened.

He explained, "It's not just his eyes. His chest wound has rapidly deteriorated. He's currently under observation in the ICU."

Nathalie's heart dropped into her stomach. Her hands instinctively clamped down on the bedsheets. She lowered her gaze, her long lashes trembling in shock, before throwing off the covers to get out of bed.

Aaron rushed to stop her. "Mrs. Adams, you're incredibly weak right now. You need to rest."

Nathalie ignored him, pointing toward the door, making it perfectly clear she was going to see Lance.

"He's not out of the woods yet," Aaron pleaded gently. "No one is allowed in the room. We'd just be standing in the hallway. Let's wait until his condition stabilizes, and then we'll take you."

Just then, the door swung open and Nicol walked in. His face lit up when he saw she was awake. "Nathalie! You're up. How are you feeling? Does anything hurt?"

She shook her head, then pointed at her throat and waved her hands in defeat.

Nicol blinked, processing the gesture, before rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. "Right. I talked to the doctor. He said the poison took your voice, but don't worry! We're definitely going to find the antidote. You'll be talking again before you know it."

He gently guided her back to the bed, his tone earnest. "The most important thing right now is for you to rest and get your strength back. Don't let your mind go to dark places. Everything is going to be fine."

He pulled a phone out of his pocket and handed it to her. "Here's your phone. I got it fully charged for you."

Nathalie took it and typed quickly. *[Thank you, Nicol. I just want to go see Lance.]*

Nicol read the screen and let out a heavy sigh. "No one can get in to see him right now. Just stay here and rest. We've got eyes on him around the clock. I promise, nothing will go wrong."

Nathalie gripped the phone tightly, eventually giving a small, defeated nod.
