Sylvie's eyes flickered for a fraction of a second before she masked it with a bright smile. "You're always so busy with work. I wouldn't dream of bothering you with my little problems."
Her brother remained in the doorway, staring her down. After a tense silence, a faint smirk touched his lips. "Sylvie, Dad spoils you, and he's handed you some serious responsibilities at the company. You absolutely cannot afford to disappoint him."
Sylvie's gaze shifted nervously. "Don't worry. I won't let Dad—or you—down."
"Good," he nodded. "Then stop playing these childish games and focus. The shareholder meeting is in two months. You need to pull in some spectacular numbers by then to shut the board up, understand?"
"I understand," Sylvie said, playing the picture of a dutiful sister.
He turned and shut the door behind him.
The moment she was alone, her sweet smile vanished, replaced by pure malice. She grabbed her phone and dialed her subordinate back. "Stand down for now. We wait a few months."
"Yes, Miss."
Sylvie tossed the phone onto the bed and closed her eyes, taking several deep breaths to calm her boiling rage.
It was infuriating! Just because her father had given her control over a few projects, her brothers were breathing down her neck, waiting for her to make a single mistake. She was their sister, for God's sake!
But she knew she had to hold off on hunting Nathalie. If her family found out who she was targeting, her life would be over.
Back at the hospital, Nathalie spent the entire day lying in bed, staring blankly out the window, completely unresponsive.
As night fell, Nicol stepped into the room. Seeing her still frozen in place, he walked over gently. "Nathalie? How are you holding up?"
