Nathalie practically leaped out of her chair.
"Take it easy, Mrs. Adams," Aaron said quickly. "If they moved him out of the ICU, it means he's officially out of the woods."
The lead physician walked into the office, overhearing Aaron, and nodded gravely. "Yes, Mr. Adams is no longer in critical condition. With proper rest, his body will recover. However..."
Nathalie stopped breathing. She stared intensely at the doctor, panic gripping her chest.
Aaron frowned. "However what?"
The doctor sighed heavily. "His eyes. We've tried every possible intervention, but the chemical damage is incredibly rare. My team simply doesn't have the capability to restore his vision. You might want to consult with top-tier international specialists. There might still be a fraction of hope."
Aaron nodded grimly. "Understood. Thank you."
He turned to Nathalie. "Come on. Let's go see him."
Nathalie nodded slowly, but her mind was spinning. The doctor's words echoed relentlessly in her head.
He can't see. He's actually blind.
The reality of it slammed into her, feeling like a giant hand crushing her windpipe. It hurt to breathe. She forced herself to take several deep breaths, fighting to keep her composure as they walked down the hall.
When they entered the suite, Lance was lying in bed. Thick white bandages covered his eyes, and an oxygen mask obscured the sharp lines of his now-hollowed face.
"Boss," Aaron said, his voice thick with relief as he stepped up to the bed. "How are you feeling?"
Lance's chapped lips moved. His voice was a harsh, gravelly whisper. "Where is Nathalie? Is she okay?"
"She's fine. She wasn't injured in the blast. It's just..." Aaron hesitated.
The temperature in the room plummeted. "Just what?" Lance snapped weakly. "Spit it out, Aaron."
Aaron let out a defeated breath. "The chemical powder burned her vocal cords. She's unable to speak for the time being."
