"Baby, I'm sorry, I was wrong. I shouldn't have choked you, I know I was wrong. Please don't go, baby, I can't live without you..."
Lawrence's voice was completely frantic, his tone bordering on begging. He held her with a desperate, crushing grip, terrified that if he let go for even a second, she would vanish into thin air. His large frame was actually trembling against hers.
But to Damaris, he was just a lunatic. A complete and utter psychopath!
How could someone's emotional state switch so violently?! One second he was trying to snap her neck, and the next he was sobbing into her hair, begging for forgiveness and claiming he couldn't live without her.
It was horrifying. He was terrifying!
"Let go! Get off of me!"
Damaris thrashed against him, her voice shattered by her sobs. "I hate you! You're a monster! I will never be with you, never!"
Her screams were laced with pure despair. She was throwing her entire body weight into the struggle, yet she couldn't even loosen his hold. His arms felt like heavy iron chains, completely immobilizing her.
It was utterly hopeless.
Hearing her cry, Lawrence only panicked more. He clumsily tried to wipe her tears away, looking utterly lost and devastated.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, baby. I really am. I didn't want to hurt you, but I was so angry. The thought of you trying to leave me... I just couldn't control myself..."
"How could you leave me? You can't leave me. You are my treasure, I finally found you. You're supposed to stay by my side forever."
He repeated the phrases over and over like a deranged mantra.
Exhaustion finally overtook Damaris. Drained of all her strength, she went limp in his arms, her tears flowing silently as she stared blankly ahead.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."
Lawrence kept whispering the apology until his voice went completely hoarse.
Damaris squeezed her eyes shut, a wave of profound numbness washing over her. "What will it take for you to just let me go?"
"Don't be afraid, baby," Lawrence murmured, pressing a gentle, chilling kiss to her forehead. "I'd never hurt you."
As he said it, he flicked the light switch.
The sudden glare made Damaris squeeze her eyes shut. When she finally forced them open, she found herself staring at a massive, floor-to-ceiling wine rack covering an entire wall.
But it wasn't holding wine. The rack was lined entirely with empty wine bottles, each containing a tightly rolled-up distress note. Every single one of the twenty-something bottles she had thrown into the ocean was sitting right there.
"Twenty-seven bottles in total. I found every last one. Am I doing a good job, baby?"
Lawrence held her tightly, his blue eyes sparkling with twisted excitement, looking at her like a massive dog waiting for praise.
Damaris felt entirely consumed by sheer terror.
"Are you... are you completely out of your mind?" she blurted out, unable to hold back the horrified question.
