But the words died in her throat. When she saw Lawrence standing in the doorway, her eyes widened in absolute shock.
It was him. He was back.
Damaris immediately stood up straight, her body going rigidly tense as she forced a terrified, placating smile onto her face.
"Y-You're back."
Lawrence stared at her panicked, guilty expression. She might as well have confessed outright.
He began walking toward her, his heavy footsteps echoing in the quiet room. His deep blue eyes, dark and turbulent as the ocean, locked onto her with terrifying intensity.
"Baby, I missed you so much while I was away. Did you miss me?"
Damaris's smile was stiff and trembling. "I... I don't think I should miss you, right?"
"But I missed you. I missed you so, so much," Lawrence murmured, stepping directly into her personal space. He reached out, his fingers gently threading through her hair, slowly gliding down to caress her cheek.
"The second I stopped working, you were all I could think about. I kept wondering what you were doing. If you were eating properly. If you were sleeping well. If you were lonely. If you were missing me..."
His voice dropped lower, turning into a dark, intimate whisper, like a lover murmuring sweet nothings against her ear. His hand slid slowly from her cheek down to her throat.
"So, I couldn't help myself. I had my men report every single thing you did to me in perfect detail."
His large hand wrapped loosely around her neck. She was trembling, every muscle in her body pulled taut. The moment his fingers fully encircled her throat, he felt her breath hitch.
In the next second, his grip tightened, crushing her windpipe.
His blue eyes were blown wide, filled with an unhinged mixture of devastation and blinding rage. "But what the hell were you doing?! Why did you throw those wine bottles into the ocean?! Were you sending out distress signals? Were you trying to find someone to save you?! Baby, my sweet girl, isn't it good enough to stay by my side?! I would treat you perfectly for the rest of your life! Why are you always trying to run away from me?!"
Lawrence screamed the questions, sounding completely psychotic, the pressure of his fingers increasing with every word.
Tears streamed down her face as she coughed.
Through her blurred vision, she saw his legs. He was standing directly over her, looking down with cold detachment. The hand that had nearly ended her life just seconds ago hung loosely at his side.
Terrified out of her mind, Damaris scrambled backward, desperately crawling toward the door.
"Monster... you're a monster! I'll never stay with a psycho like you, I won't—!"
She sobbed hysterically as she dragged herself across the floor, driven by a primal need to escape.
"Baby, don't leave me. Baby..."
Suddenly, she was hauled off the ground and enveloped in a massive, suffocating embrace. His heavy arms locked around her like steel bands.
