The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 64

That afternoon, Nathalie and Damaris got back from shopping, only to find someone waiting outside Nathalie’s building.

He was leaning against the wall, looking like he owned the place. His suit was just kind of thrown on, no tie, the first two buttons of his white shirt undone, giving him this easygoing, stubborn vibe that was hard to ignore.

The second Damaris saw him, she didn’t miss a beat. “What the hell are you doing here, you piece of trash?”

Lance didn’t even look at her. His eyes were locked straight on Nathalie, like nobody else existed.

“Come with me to the hospital.”

Nathalie gave him a sharp, mocking smile. “Oh, let me guess. So I can get down on my knees and apologize to your precious nephew?”

Whenever Lance was around, it was as if every single one of Nathalie’s defenses went up. It didn’t matter what he said or did. She was always ready to bite back.

Lance’s eyebrows drew together. He stood up straight, walked right over, and grabbed her hand, not giving her a chance to pull away. “No. You’re not the one who’s going to apologize. Someone else is going to kneel in front of you and say sorry.”

He pressed the elevator button. The doors opened right away.

Nathalie tried to yank her hand away, but he only tightened his grip, leading her inside. Damaris slipped in with them, not missing a beat.

Lance looked at her like she was some annoying fly. “This doesn’t concern you. Leave.”

But Damaris just raised her chin, completely unfazed. “Oh, I’m definitely staying. I want to see how you’re going to pull this off. If you don’t, well… you’re nothing.” She gave him the universal pinky sign of contempt, not bothering to hide her scorn.

Lance ignored her. He just held tighter to Nathalie’s hand, not willing to let go, no matter how she twisted to get away.

He glanced back at her. “Didn’t you already agree?”

Daniel cut to the chase as soon as they walked in. His voice was low. “Lance, what’s all this? Why did you call us here and make such a scene?”

Lance didn’t answer at first. He just tossed his tablet onto the foot of the hospital bed. “Take a look. These are the kids’ statements.”

Daniel’s expression darkened. “What kind of attitude is this?”

Lance still didn’t answer him. Instead, he turned to the maid, nodding for her to speak.

She dropped to her knees, trembling. “I... I know I was wrong. The truth is, I didn’t see anything last night. I just... I just really don’t like Nathalie. I couldn’t stand the way she acted, so I wanted to get back at her. I’m sorry… I really am... I know it was wrong...”

The maid started bowing her head to Nathalie, pleading. “Nathalie, please, I’m begging you, let this go. I’m so sorry.”

Lance sat down on the hospital bed and pulled Jasper into his lap, his tone soft as he asked, “Jasper, tell me honestly, did anyone kick you last night?”
