Camilla picked up the tablet and hit play. On the screen, all the kids were saying the same thing. No one saw Nathalie kick anyone. Jasper just slipped and fell.
Jasper was sitting in Lance’s lap, looking small and scared. His hands gripped Lance’s shirt tight, his big eyes searching everyone’s faces, not knowing where to look. His voice was barely above a whisper. “I don’t know…”
Lance’s eyebrows drew tight together. “You really don’t know?”
Jasper’s eyes filled up with tears. “I… I don’t know…”
Felice stepped in quickly. “Lance, he’s still little. After such a big fall, of course he’s scared. Don’t pressure him, okay?”
She gently pulled Jasper out of Lance’s arms, sparing a quick look at the tablet. “So, we all agree Nathalie had nothing to do with it. I rushed to judgment last night and blamed her by mistake. Nathalie, I owe you an apology.”
Felice turned to Nathalie and gave a small, respectful bow. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have blamed you for something you didn’t do.”
Jasper twisted in Felice’s arms, reaching out for Lance. “Lance…”
Felice pulled him back. “Jasper, sweetheart, don’t bother Lance right now. We probably shouldn’t see him so much from now on, okay?”
Jasper started crying harder. “No, I want Lance. I want to be with Lance.”
Felice gave a playful tap to his arm. “Why are you being so stubborn? Look at what happened. Because of all this, Lance and Nathalie are about to get divorced. We can’t bother them anymore. From now on, you’re sticking with Mom.”
Jasper’s tears came faster.
Camilla couldn’t take it anymore. She came over, her voice full of concern. “Felice, don’t scold him. He’s still not feeling well. Come to Grandma.” She took Jasper in her arms and rocked him gently, trying to calm him.
Daniel’s face darkened. “So now you’re blaming me? If you hadn’t always been at odds with Felice, how was I supposed to think otherwise?”
“Dad.”
Lance’s voice cut through the room, low and cold. The whole mood shifted, a chill settling in.
“Let’s just talk about what happened last night. No need to drag up old arguments.”
Daniel glared at him. “Lance, are you forgetting who you’re talking to? Mind your tone.”
Lance’s expression stayed icy, his presence only growing heavier. “I just want to sort this out so no one walks away thinking you can’t tell right from wrong.”
