The Unwavering Heart That Broke (Nathalie and Lance) novel Chapter 644

Nathalie paused and shot him a baffled look.

Was this something he would actually say? Knowing his personality, him not pushing his luck was already a miracle!

Now he was being all polite and distant with her.

She didn't react further and went back to her porridge.

Listening to her movements, Lance's lips curled into a faint smile.

After she finished, the doctor came in for the checkup. Lance's chest wound had stopped worsening. The doctor then checked his eyes and changed the dressing.

Nathalie watched the entire process. When the doctor removed the bandages from his eyes, her breath hitched.

His eyes were covered in ointment and tightly shut. The corners were stark red, and tears were rolling down his cheeks.

Nathalie stared at the tears, her gaze trembling.

She lowered her eyes, only to notice his hands resting on his thighs. They were curled into tight fists, knuckles white and veins bulging from the strain.

She blinked, thinking she was seeing things, but when she looked again, his fists were still clenched.

Why was he clenching his fists?

Did his eyes... hurt that much?

Suddenly, she remembered what he had said last night. He had told her his eyes hurt, and she had thought he was just playing the victim.

But looking at him now, he hadn't been faking it at all.

In that moment, a heavy, suffocating wave of sorrow hit Nathalie's chest. The ache piled up, layer upon layer, threatening to erupt like a volcano.

She felt incredibly sad.

So sad that her throat tightened and tears pricked her eyes.

...

Before they came out, Nathalie had quickly walked away, even taking off her shoes to mute her footsteps.

Once she reached the corner, she slipped her shoes back on. Lance's pained, heavy breathing echoed in her ears, gripping her heart like a vice.

She took a few deep breaths, then went to find his attending physician.

"Mrs. Adams, is there something you need?" The doctor was surprised to see her.

Nathalie looked down and typed. The robotic voice asked, "Are his eyes in constant pain?"

The doctor nodded. "Yes. The poison's composition is complex, and it burned his eyes. The eyes are incredibly fragile. Until we develop a specific antidote, Mr. Adams will continue to experience severe pain. Regular painkillers are no longer effective."

Nathalie paled, her fingers typing in a flurry of panic. "When will the antidote be ready?"
